İf Honda can achieve objectives of this season ( assuming 30 hp with this update and another 30 with spec 3 ) and a step forward for next season with mcaren I think they can win races next year.
They can't and they won't. McLaren needs to go out of this relationship as soon as possible.
That is your opinion not McLaren's official stance.

Officially Eric said Honda needs to make a big step.

This is engeering, it takes times but You fix things 1 at a time and you keep moving forward.

I just found a nice comparison of Qualifying speeds, so all should be at full power:

Vandoorne: 330,3 kph
Alonso: 327,9 kph
Ricciardo: 356,3 kph (its a "weak" Renault)
http://www.motorsport-magazin.com/forme ... aus-in-q1/
(its german, use google translate)

So how fast was Alonso again with the new PU on Friday, does someone still have an overview?

Can't remember but most of them were running low downforce on Friday so the top speed would have been more anyway.

No point in thinking about it until they also show a good run of reliability and better fuel consumption.
The power of Red Bull Powertrains!

They can move to merc PU but results will not be too different. It could be different this season but you know they are using Honda PU

There is one MAJOR mistake here... They took out the upgraded engine afte FP2.. Alonso ran an old engine in qually.

The new engine was about 15kph faster
than the old one if you wanted to know though.

McLaren were experimenting with downforce levels with the two cars so that makes it impossible to calculate how much more power the upgrade brought.

Toto Wolff on McLaren Honda/Mercedes, Mercedes helping Honda and Merc sponsors related answers. Not sure if it was already posted.

"If HONDA were to decide they don't want the relationship with McLaren anymore and McLaren would be left without the engine..." than they would consider supplying McLaren.

Interesting interview to see anyway:
https://youtu.be/3GFUbgWMc2o

To me that sounds like a NO - similar to one RedBull got unless McLaren persuades Honda to terminate the agreement, which by the "wet cat" faces lately and tone change since last week at McLaren (except for Alonso - I believe he will quit and make an other career move mistake), I don't think they (Honda) are willing to "exit".

Renault looks keen to do it, according to some latest news, but that might see one of the current Renault powered team move to Honda - I know Renault said they could supply a fourth team (Toro Rosso would be my first guess) and McLaren would be directly faced with the Red Bull + left with an inferior petrol supplier and McLaren Renault does not sound right from the marketing point of view.

McLaren Ferrari/AlfaRomeo? I don't think so but let's see. Toto doesn't even mention them as a possibility.

the funny irony about all this is that depsite the supposed top speed difficicies vs the top teams alonso was only 0.01 off of Q2 and a couple tenths behind most of the 11-15 runners.
So in theory IF he can have a clean race it could be like canada where attrition and some good driving can work some magic....just a thought

Alonso and Vandoorne used an old engine specification in qually (Spec 2)

Image

About Spec 3 engine
Honda tried ‘spec 3’ on Alonso’s car and went 16 km/h faster
https://maxf1.net/en/honda-tried-spec-3 ... mh-faster/
Alonso and Vandoorne used a similar aerodynamic settings for the second free practice and Spaniard went 16 km/f faster than his team mate (330 vs 314 km/h) although official speed trap figures reveal that Alonso went 342.4 km/h compared to 319.7 km/h of Vandoorne, which is probably influenced by the tow.

Honda brings 30 BHP upgrade in Baku
https://maxf1.net/en/honda-brings-30-bh ... e-in-baku/
...
"But Honda continues with the plan and in Baku brings the first part of the upgrade. How much power it brings nobody knows exactly. McLaren said they brought 12 BHP, but it could easily be conservative number for fear of failing to fulfill the promise again so they decided to make a more conservative estimate.
From other sources, Auto Motor und Sport learned that Honda in Baku brought about 30 BHP, which is half of the predicted 60 BHP progress of the whole upgrade. Part of this 30 BHP jump definitely comes from new fuel and lubricant.

The second part of the upgrade will arrive after a summer break, for the fast trails in Belgium and Italy."

Of course I will like to see this update on track as finishing races with point which was not possible by now.
We still didn't see the results of this but my eyes on other 30 hp. For us, Mclaren Honda fans, season starts after summer breake.

Gaining 0.3 sec in modern F1 actually is a great job. The overall complaining is getting really annoying here.
