BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Diesel-Electric Hybrid Supercar

News came out last month that BMW were going to produce their Vision EfficientDynamics turbodiesel plug-in hybrid concept car.

  • CF chassis
  • Mid (rear?) engine, AWD
  • 1.5L I-3 cyl turbodiesel
  • 6 spd DCT
  • Rear axle motor (sandwiched between engine and DCT): 33 (51 hp peak) / 214 lb-ft
  • Front axle synchronous motor: 80hp/162 lb-ft (112 horsepower is available for 30 seconds, 139 horsepower is available for 10 seconds)
    Total potential system output: 356 hp/590 lb-ft

Now its confirmed as a 2013 model with an approximate £150,000 / $200,000 price tag:

At the official launch of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, Robertson announced that the car would be less than 150,000 Pounds which translates to about $200,000 when it hits our shores. That is a decent savings over the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell which should cost $250,000 when it arrives in 2012.

BMW's Vision EfficientDynamics has a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine paired with a hybrid synchronous motor in front and a full-hybrid engine in back for an overall 328 horsepower. The hybrid can get to 60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds. Average fuel economy is estimated at 62.5 mpg, and BMW claims a range of 31 miles on electricity alone and up to 435 miles with the diesel engine.

The body has gullwing doors and aerodynamic styling for a drag coefficient of 0.22, same as the concept, says BMW.

The powertrain provides a top speed limited electronically to 155 mph, with acceleration to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 3.76 liters/100 kilometers, equal to 62.6 mpg, and the CO2 emission rating is 99 grams per kilometer. ...Taking all emissions in the generation of electricity into account, as prescribed by the EU formula, the car's emission rating is just 50 grams per kilometer.

The combustion engine is a cutting-edge turbodiesel featured for the first time in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. Displacing 1.5 liters on three cylinders...

Through its compact dimensions, the 3-cylinder fits conveniently in front of the rear axle like in an agile mid-engine sports car, despite the two seats at the rear. Fuel is injected by the latest generation of High Precision Direct Injection, and the turbocharger features variable intake geometry for maximum efficiency. Engine output is 163 hp with peak torque of 214 lb-ft.

The specific output of 109 hp per liter sets a new benchmark in diesel technology. The power delivered by the turbodiesel is conveyed to the rear axle by means of a double-clutch transmission (DCT).

The combustion engine is supplemented by two electric motors. ...combination of a hybrid synchronous motor on the front axle and a full-hybrid system at the rear.

The rear axle comes with a second-generation full-hybrid system... The compact electric motor positioned between the diesel engine and the DCT outputs a consistent 33 horsepower and is able to reach a peak of up to 51 hp. Maximum torque for the rear electric motor is 214 lb-ft. :?:

A second electric motor acts on the front axle. This engine, a hybrid synchronous motor, offers continuous output of 80 horsepower and peak torque of 162 lb-ft. Extra power of 112 horsepower is available for a period of up to 30 seconds, and, for a 10-second "burst," the electric motor is able to develop 139 horsepower. The power is transmitted through a 2-stage, single-speed reduction gearbox.

...able to run completely under electric power, with the power of the turbodiesel engine alone, or through an infinite combination of the three power sources. Depending on driving conditions, the two electric motors may be used both for accelerating and for regenerating energy when applying the brakes and while coasting. ...For a short time, such as in passing maneuvers, the cumulative maximum output of all three engines increases to 356 hp, with maximum torque generated by the three engines reaching 590 lb-ft.

The energy cells featured in BMW Vision EfficientDynamics are housed in a chassis element running from front to rear through the middle of the car. The front unit is the lithium-polymer complex, an ongoing development of the lithium-ion battery. ...a total of 98 lithium-polymer cells, each offering a capacity of 30 amp/hours and developing continuous output of 600 Amps at a voltage of 3.7 V. For a period of 30 seconds, each cell is even able to develop maximum output of 1,200 Amps.

...Serial arrangement of the lithium-polymer cells serves to generate nominal voltage of 364 volts, the gross storage capacity of the battery is 10.8 kW/h. With an unusually high discharge capacity of 80 percent, the battery delivers 8.6 kW/h for driving the car. This superior performance comes on overall weight of the entire energy storage system of just 187 lb. ..

...the lithium-polymer cells, together with the operating strategy chosen with a concept of "forward looking" energy management, reduces the thermal load acting on the battery to such an extent that there is no need for active cooling... :?:

...Connected to a standard EU power outlet (220 V, 16 Amps), the system requires a maximum of 2 ½ hours to fully charge the lithium-polymer cells. And wherever a power source with higher voltage and amperage (380 V, 32 Amps) is available, the charge time is an even shorter 44 minutes...

...comes with a conventional fuel tank at the rear end of the central chassis tunnel, offering a capacity of 6.6 gallons. Running on diesel fuel alone, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is able to cover a distance of approximately 400 miles with its combustion engine. Benefitting from an extra range of up to 31 miles in the all-electric mode, the car offers an overall range of approximately 431 miles...
The name is terrible, and it doesn't really qualify as a supercar these days, but it is a fantastic combination of interesting ideas. Kudos to them for developing such a unique powertrain. =D>

Edit: It looks as though it would qualify as rear engine.

The battery would store 364 kJ/kg. That means an F1 KERS battery with 4 MJ from the same technology would weight in at 11 kg. Not too bad. All facts considered an interesting car to have for rich people in metropols.

Yes, a very valid point. We did some detailed calculations for F1 in a dedicated thread and found that power density requirements for a 4 MJ KERS will push battery weights beyond 100 kg for published technologies.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

To store 4 MJ should not be a significant issue. A123Systems claim their prismatic power cells can provide up to 5300 W/kg, and their energy density is roughly 135 Wh/kg. 4 MJ is about 1111 Wh, or 8 kg using the ealier mentioned batteries. To supply 120 kW power should be the main issue, even with 5300 Wh/kg it will require more than 23 kg batteries.

Not too sure about the look but I like the technology. Hopefully they can mass-produce a car with an engine like that in it for a lot less money so we can all buy one. I do like the idea of using a diesel engine over a normal gas engine for a hybrid.
