Gutierrez builds his future on Ferrari

Esteban Gutierrez enjoys his time at Ferrari as a reserve driver, but he thinks that he still has a chance to come back into Formula 1 as a racing driver. The Mexican spent two years at Sauber, but he was dropped by the Swiss squad at the end of last year. He then joined Ferrari as the official third driver.

He has conducted intense work in the team’s sophisticated simulator over the course of the season.

Esteban was given testing duties during the post-race test sessions at Barcelona and Spielberg and he is rumoured to have a sight at one of the seats of the new entrant Haas Team.

The former GP3 champion wants to race in the pinnacle of motorsport again, but he is aware of the challenging task of getting a racing opportunity again.

"First of all, it's not easy to get into Formula One. Secondly it's not easy to be out and then in again. This is a risk that was taken with a vision and with a project in front. Thankfully, things have been going very well with my relationship with Scuderia Ferrari, and I'm very happy with how things have been going.

"I've been trying to contribute a lot to them, and it's opening new opportunities for me in the future. I'm working very hard to consolidate that for next season."

Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene stated earlier this year that the Mexican may get a test opportunity at his home venue when Formula One returns to Mexico after a long time. Gutierrez revealed that it all depends on what Ferrari’s position is in the standings compared to their direct rivals.

"It's not confirmed ... Ferrari wants to give me the opportunity. I think it would be something very special, but obviously it depends on many things.

"My boss, Maurizio Arrivabene, has already mentioned that possibility. I think it would basically depend on how things are going on in the championship at that stage."
