Unforgetable! - Alonso

The reigning World Champion, Fernando Alonso, took one of his greatest wins today in front of his home crowd. 130.000 Spaniards could see how Alonso took the win in front of Michael Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella. Here follows the interview with Alonso.

You have won the Spanish Grand Prix, and were congratulated on the podium by the King. What a day!

"I know! Nothing can compare to this! I have had some fantastic moments in F1 during the last months… After Brazil 2005 when I won the world title, this Grand Prix will stay with me forever. There was a lot of pressure at Sao Paulo last year and we had to make some compromises to win the title, but today I was just thinking of the pleasure of winning the race."

How was the race for you?

"Giancarlo got a better start than me, but I was able to defend my position and take the lead after turn 1. Then, I had quite a short first stint, because we had quite a different strategy. We wanted to build a gap at the start of the race, and then control things."

Were you flat out?

"Yes, I was right on the limit at the start of the race. I really wanted to get this win. At the end, I was able to manage my pace because I wanted to look after the car."

Did the crowd help you today?

"I think so. Every time I came out of the pits in front of the Ferrari, the people realised I was leading and it was going crazy in the stands. I saw the flags waving, people standing up, it was unforgettable. I will remember every moment of this weekend."
