Heikki was just perfect - Chevrier

The ING Renault F1 Team's Head of Trackside Engine Operations, Denis Chevrier, talks about today’s race. Fisichella received a black flag as he ignored the red light at the pit lane exit. Team mate Heikki Kovalainen saved the day for Renault as the rookie finished 4th.

Denis, what did you make of this chaotic grand prix?

"The chances of seeing the safety car come out are very high in Montreal, so the teams prepare as best they can. For example, if your two drivers start with a gap between their refuelling windows, one of them always has room for manoeuvre if the other is penalised. When the safety car comes out with its inevitable consequences, we try to limit the damage but you always need a smidgen of luck."

Is Heikki’s fourth place the fruit of team work?

"Absolutely. While the driver is doing his best to keep his car on the track, which is usually very slippery in Montreal, and also trying to get the maximum out of it, his engineers are scratching their heads as to what is the best strategy to adopt. From that point of view Heikki was just perfect today. He pushed right from the start gaining several places and he really had the bit between his teeth! His approach paid off."

And what about Giancarlo?

"Giancarlo was certainly quick enough to race with the cars in front of him. Apart from Hamilton, who was a cut above everybody else today, he was in a position to battle it out with all the others. Unfortunately, an error led to disqualification and the loss of a few points."
