Things really start tomorrow - Kovalainen

After encouraging testing last week, ING Renault F1 Team driver Heikki Kovalainen seems quite confident for the first runs tomorrow. Just like at Turkey, the young Finn hopes to shine during the Italian GP weekend.

Last year that Renault announced here that you would be a works driver for the 2007 season. A good memory?

"Yes, but at the same time I hadn’t thought about it until you mentioned it! What’s more I knew before you did (laughs). It’s true in one way that at Monza things really began to take off for me."

In Turkey, Renault announced that the development of the R27 was suspended to speed up preparation for 2008. Yet it was there that you gave one of your best performances of the season. Was it a bit of a surprise?

"No. It was just that the circuit suited our car and our set-up very well. What’s more we never said that we were stopping working this year. There was a lot done during the summer break. We’re getting on with improving our understanding of the new front wing fitted 2 races earlier."

How did testing at Monza go? Does the low downforce/low drag set-up suit the Renault?

"Testing went well. Especially for me as I was lucky enough to drive the only day when there was no rain. I worked on this weekend’s set-up. I was happy with the car. But we all know that testing’s just testing. Things really start tomorrow and we’ll have to adapt to the conditions.”
