Heidfeld positive towards 2008

Having finished fifth in the 2007 Drivers' Championship, Nick Heidfeld secured the best result in his Formula One career to date. Despite being of the opinion that making another significant step forward in 2008 will be difficult, the German remains positive about being able to achieve the goals set for the coming season.

61 World Championship points, two podium finishes and fifth position in the Drivers' Championship: for Nick Heidfeld, the 2007 season proved to be a major success. "Never did I believe that such success would be possible," Heidfeld admits. "I expected Renault, in particular, to be more competitive. After all, they had won the two previous World Championships. I had hoped that we might finish fourth. Hence, it came as a big surprise to me that we could beat them and that we were clearly stronger than them in every single race."

In the coming season, the BMW Sauber F1 Team is due to make another step forward. The goal: to keep on closing the gap to the top teams. It's anything but an easy task, according to Nick. "Looking ahead to the coming season you have to admit that the time gap still is a rather big one. We always held the position behind the two top teams while remaining ahead of the others. This was fantastic for 2007, but catching up half a second in 2008 won't be a walk in the park."

However, Nick is well aware of the Munich and Hinwil based squad's competitiveness. "We are positive about being able to realise the goals we have set ourselves," the family man concludes.
