and yes, it seems he was the fastest on average (he took the fastest 25 laps). And with all the Toyota drivers having about the same number of laps, this seems pretty convincing.

Looks like he wasn't only the fastest on average but also easily the most consistent driver of the toyota bunch

But didn't Alonso run mostly at night time? AFAIK, the more preferable lower track temps should have helped him in that case. I wonder about the tires they use (prime/option); do the teams opt to run certain sets at certain points in the race, and could that influence these average lap times too?

Nevertheless, I was still quite impressed by Alonso. Endurance racing is quite different from single seater racing, and as a rookie he did a tremendous job.

He was the best at switching on the tyres at night of the Toyota drivers. During the day the was overdriving the tyres

Is the penalty of running at night - difficult to see the circuit, tired drivers around you etc., more or less than the benefit from lower temps? I have no idea but I would think that driving in the dark must have an adverse impact on lap times.

One would think. However: Cooler, denser air at night. Perhaps an aero benefit along with tire temps. In terms of visual processing, maybe there's a benefit to only being able to see what's in the headlights. No peripheral stimulation/distraction.

As a couple of drivers pointed out, at night it is easier to develop what they called tunnel vision. IE less distractions.

Judging by that 'heatmap' he was still quick and consistent if i'm reading it correctly (the thicker the faster, the less up/down the more consistent)

And if you look at what Hollus posted above from twitter user lachnar and maybe even click through some of the graphs it shows he was in a class of his own.

I don't know about the graphs but from the onboards he looked to be very very smooth.

Wow, an average of 4,6 seconds/lap faster on a 20 laps stint


He said at the tv he´s more aggressive on the tires compared to his teammates, so he has more overheating problems at day, but at night he can make the tires work better so he was able to attack and reduce the gap. Even so, 4.6 seconds faster for 20 laps is impressive

Anycase, having more overheating problems does not mean he was not fast at day

Was big on downforce. Tough to pass, but a hell of a slipstream. Drivers disappointed with the engine performance, though. Kept shouting, "QE2 engine! QE2 engine!"
