No richard,

They said that currently they have no intention to appeal.

Just thought I would add the disclaimer...

It really does look like a Cosworth backed initiative. Perhaps Williams being FIA poster boys, where happy to have written the letter that Charlie Whiting recieved last week. But I feel there is more to it than Williams just wanting a "rule clarification".

To me, I would say Cosworth was waving the white flag and got its teams onside to play hardball.

It seems Williams asked for clarification - nothing wrong with that - and Charlie Whiting then scratched his head and thought "wait a minutes" as the penny dropped with an almighty thud.

I doubt if Whiting has the mandate to issue a mid-season ban just like that, the decision must have come from higher up, no?

Perhaps it was Williams asking for clarification, but I believe that Mercedes was part of getting the ban så promptly.

The idea that Jean Todt would risk upsetting the top end of the grid, including Ferrari, with an unprecedented mid-season ban just in order to satisfy Williams and Cosworth is rather implausible to xpress it politely.

[...]
Anyway, you are speculating wildly. For what ends, I couldnt say.
Its Williams. We KNOW that now. you really ought to drop this, as I advised a while back.

[...]I don't believe for a minute that this was only Williams and Virgin and that is what I was agreeing with. My money is on Ferrari and McLaren. [...]

If i'm not mistaken, I think Ferrari and Jean Todt had a falling out around 2007 so, Ferrari won't be expecting any favors.

Sadly, Cosworth are not the force they once were and are probably struggling to get an overrun system to work properly. It's a bit sad really...

Agreed J_A_F.

But then Cosworth being brought into F1 by Max under who knows what promises led to this. What price Cosworth and Williams having Ferrari style veto powers.... :o

Science Fiction plot-
Haug texts Frank Williams "Hey Frank, how about running Mercedes engines next year, we'll cut a really good deal for ya, much cheaper than Cosworth. You just have to do one little thing and fill out a couple of forms post race this weekend.

Please confirm an hour before the race, we need time to ask the FIA premission for connections to the ECU in Perc Ferme, on all our Merc customers.

Could be Maldonado's first podium or even a win, and help you out with some attraction of sponsorship plus help cut your budget for next year. Let me know, how we can help..."

Could something like this get discussed? Is F1 that cut throat? I think it is....but the top guns or the FIA don't want to be the bad guys and the little guys need the money.....How about Virgin in same text, Branson doesn't really have a reputation built yet or does he?

End of movie...

I think we are getting into the realms of fantasy now.........

Need to add HRT to the list of culprits. They are not ruling out protesting that the blown diffusers are illegal.

[...] I think speedsense's scenario is a bit over the top, but Mercedes earlier throwing their weight behind Williams asking for a "clarification" I hold far more likely.

The FIA issuing a mid-season technology ban to the benefit of Cosworth and the minnows, naah...
