Fernando Alonso, the Spanish World Champion, collected first pole position of the year at Nürburgring this afternoon. The Mild Seven Renault F1 Team driver is aiming high for tomorrow. Here follows the interview with Alonso.

Fernando, how was qualifying for you?

"It was hard to find a good alance yesterday but we made some good changes to the set-up, and it was much better today. Qualifying is always a bit stressful and difficult, and the final part of the session is always very close and it is easy to make mistakes. Today, though, we had no problems: the car was perfect, and there was no traffic. It was the opposite of the last few times!"

It is your first pole of the year...

"It's true that we have had some difficult qualifying sessions this season, sometimes because of mistakes or traffic. We are in a better positiont his weekend and it will be important for tomorrow. The Nürburgring can be quite tricky int he first corner, and it is much safer to start from the front. It means there is less risk of an accident."

What are you aiming for tomorrow?

"I think we will have an interesting race. We have a good pace on the long runs, like Ferrari. So I think it will be close but I think I can fight for the win. The car is competitive, and it will be important to be on the podium again. I have had good starts all year, so I think I can get to the first corner in the lead tomorrow."
