Directing air around the front wheels

By on

The new wider front wings have caused the endplate to have a significantly different function than was previously the case. Instead of trying to direct air in between the front wheels, this year's endplates aim to direct air around the front wheels. While some teams debuted their cars with solutions to move air both sides of the front wheels, the Brawn way has proven more efficient. Although not the only team with this approach, the front wing endplates of the BGP001 show intelligent design.

The leading edge of the yellow part catches air inside the end plate system, while the outer two plates work in conjunction to efficently direct airflow around the rotating front wheel. The additional outer elements has already proved to be interesting for other teams as many have already copied the design - although less developed but as an add-on on their existing designs.

this front wing is really interesting, 3 end plates to guide air around the front wing. it is probably interupted so that the front wing can get energized by the end plates inxcreasing its function.

Well that explains it, the BGP001 was designed by god :P. I say we teach the controversy.

@Shi Ruan: hehe, not that intelligent, but at least the engineers that thought out the design did so intelligently, using their brain ;)

While Toyota also have a quite special FWEP, I'm curious to see as to when other teams will introduce a similar item compared to the very simple versions that some are currently running.

every design on the BGP001 makes me look at it in amazement

I thought Ross Brawn IS God? :-)

The unsung heros of F1 is the individual engineers who creatively identify improvement opportunities to make an F1 car go faster eventhough the FIA makes every effort to limit the cars potential. This is a technical forum for technically minded people and not meant for religious debates. Thank you.

at the start of the season BGP already had a car with very detailed aero elements compared to many other big teams. only now some of th eteams are starting to use little plates to adjust aero direction to create an effect. hands up to brawn gp
