Martin Slater became a designer for Lola, Brabham and March after he spent some time building and racing his own Formula Junior cars. When he reached 005 of his Lyncar series build for the British Formula Atlantic Championship, the car proved very succesful driven by engine tuner John Nicholson who won the 1973 and 1974 Formula Atlantic titles.
Nicholson then commissioned the Lyncar 006 for Formula One with a Cosworth engine. It was raced in non F1 championship Grand Prix and managed to qualify for the British GP which later resulted in a 17th place classification. As Nicholson left F1 the Lyncar was modified and raced by Emilio de Villota in Iberia colors in 1976 and 1977. The Spaniard even managed to win one race at Mallory Park.
