MotoE: Ferrari secures double victory at Spielberg, new Hungarian star Varga secures his best MotoE result

Felo Gresini rider Matteo Ferrari secured double victory at Spielberg, winning both MotoE races at the Red Bull Ring, whilst Hungarian rising star Tibor Varga fractionally missed out on his first MotoE podium. F1Technical's senior writer Balazs Szabo reports on the MotoE's Spielberg weekend.
Race 1After a long break since the opening two rounds in France and the Neteherlands, the MotoE field competed at the Red Bull Ring, with two races having taken place on Saturday.
Matteo Ferrari secured pole position in qualifying, but he was unable to maintain the lead on the opening lap as Mattia Casadei passed him at Turn 4.
However, the LCE E-Team rider crashed at Turn 6 from the lead which left him - understandably - very angry as it was his second costly mistake in three races.
Casadei's mistake promoted Ferrari into the lead, and he was able to escape from the chasing pack to win the first MotoE race at Spielberg, ending his victory drought.
There was a fierce battle for the remaining two podium places though. Hector Garzo ended up second, fractionally beating Eric Granado, who secured his first podium finish in 2025.

Race 2 saw multiple riders battle it out for the victory. Matteo Ferrari led the pack from pole position, but there was drama already on the first lap. Kevin Zannoni and championship leader Andrea Mantovani had a contact at the chicane which sent the Aspar Team rider into the gravel trap.
Initially, the front-runners looked to be able to escape from the chasing pack, but as they battled it out, several riders managed to join the fight for the top positions.
With only four laps to go, Hector Garzo flew into the lead, with Ferrari dropping back to third behind Matteo Cassadei. However, Ferrari managed to keep his composure and regained the lead a lap later.
In the meantime, Hungarian rising star Tibor Varga worked his way up into fourth place, replicating his impressive form from Race 1.
On the penultimate lap, Ferrari led the pack from Casadei, Granado, Varga and Garzo. However, the Italian made a mistake which allowed Casadei to take over the lead.
The top three started the last lap with a slight margin over the rest, but as they arrived at Turn 1, Granado made a costly mistake, falling at the Niki Lauda corner. It promoted Varga into third place.
The dying moments of the second Spielberg race saw Ferrari make a race-deciding move on Cassadei into the Jochen Rindt corner, taking over the lead to secure his second victory of the season.
Garzo also made a move on Varga on the same spot, robbing the Hungarian of his first MotoE podium, albeit it was still his best result in his debut MotoE season.
