"We were just on another level today," claims Norris after his dominant victory at the Hungaroring
Lando Norris converted his pole position into victory at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, overcoming an early setback to claim his first win of the season in a dominant display for McLaren.
Although Norris started from pole after an impressive qualifying performance on Saturday, his race did not begin according to plan. The Briton lost the lead to teammate Oscar Piastri at Turn 2 on the opening lap, leaving him to spend the opening stint tucked in behind the Australian. Despite the frustration, Norris remained confident that he had the pace to fight back.
"What pleases me the most? Just the fact we were so quick, the fact the car was, of course, very strong today," Norris said after the race. "The car was still horrible to drive at times, but quick, and I'd rather have a horrible but quick car than anything else."
Rather than forcing an aggressive move on his teammate, the reigning champion stayed within McLaren's team guidelines while applying constant pressure.
His superior tyre management and race pace kept him firmly in contention, and the team's strategy ultimately helped him regain the advantage before pulling away to a commanding victory by more than 15 seconds.
Reflecting on the race, Norris admitted he never doubted the outcome despite losing the lead on the opening lap.
"The pace I had the whole race, even behind Oscar at the beginning... I was convinced I could still win the race today," he explained. "Whether I would box or force him to box and I would go long, get fresh tyres and come back through, I was convinced I could win the race today, and we did."
The victory came after an unfortunate end to Piastri's afternoon, denying McLaren what Norris believed could have been a comfortable one-two finish.
"It was unfortunate for him and unlucky, because I think we could have had a one-two," Norris said. "But otherwise, just my pace. My pace to stay so close to him for so long.
"We were just on another level today, and I felt in a very good flow of things. When the car's good and when I'm in a good flow, there's no stopping."
During the race, Norris was eager to use strategy to gain track position, revealing after the finish that he had pushed the team to consider an earlier pit stop to undercut Piastri. However, McLaren opted for the safer team-first approach to avoid compromising either driver's race.
"I just want to win the race," Norris admitted. "There are certain rules we have as a team, and we can't harm each other's race by being overly aggressive. But I want to win, and I certainly had much better pace than him."
He added that while he believed an undercut could have secured him the lead earlier, he understood the team's decision.
"It was just in the best interests of the team, which they rightly have to say back against me. But I want to do whatever I can to try and win a race, of course."
The result marks Norris' 12th Formula 1 victory and gives McLaren further momentum heading into the summer break. However, the Briton insisted that one dominant weekend does not guarantee similar performances for the remainder of the season.
"I'm just happy with today," Norris said. "It doesn't mean if I'm quick here, we're going to be quick everywhere. One thing I've learned for sure is just to have no expectations of the future and just to work in the present."
While optimistic about McLaren's trajectory, Norris acknowledged there is still work to do.
"I think we can win more races, but we have good competition and there are still plenty of races I'm not confident in because the car is not to the standard that it needs to be in certain areas.
"But I have confidence in the team. I had confidence that we could win a race, and it came a bit sooner than I thought," concluded the reigning champion.
