Toyota go modern with front wing

By on

Finally Toyota have got rid of their front wing that was seemingly composed of an unmatched series of flaps. Instead the team now follows suit with Ferrari, Renault and Williams by introducing an extra wing above the base panel, spanning from the nose to the end plate. The design is similar, although the attachments to the nose cone appear to be well thought out. While Renault have opted for small attachments points on the upper side of the nose, the Toyota design features more straight flaps which are seamlessly connected to the tip of the nose cone. Looking at the car from the front, the nose even appears to be wider and flatter than it really is.

Wide attachemet flaps look nice, but why increase unecessary weight & drag when smaller Renault/Ferrari attach. points work? :?

Probably they increase downforce or guide the air somewhere... DonĀ“t you think that they have figured it out?

Yeah, I believe alot of drag can be reduced by smoothing out the wing root like Toyota have done, it reminds me of the wingroots on old WWII aircraft like the Supermarine Spitfire. As for why they chose a much bigger wing root, I\'m sure only CFD could reveal it, but it probably helps with flow conditioning.

What interests me is why it has taken a team like Toyota (obviously not hurting in the budget department) so long to introduce a front wing with an upper element that connects to the nosecone. Is it the fact that other aero elements must be changed in conjunction for optimal downforce/drag combination, or that maybe this seemingly obvious improment is a bit harder to craft than it appears?

Judging my the looks of that wing and the rest of the car, I think Toyota is totally lost for 07. I think they should start concentrating on 2008 already and forget about this year. :?

Poor Toyota.... I was looking back on old Autosport Mags and they have been lost from the get go.

A lot of the development that teams run, is also aimed at throwing off the opposition into researching something that is not actually \"better\". I wonder if this development was tested with honest reasons in mind or if it was just shown to have other teams waste time with it as well.

If they actually want to implement this change, then I assume it helps with the airflow around the cockpit, perhaps a better solution that the little ears that Renault and McLaren are testing/using.

One thing is for sure though; we\'ll find out soon, in Australia if they genuinely tested this front wing. Perhaps they want to keep it for slow, windy circuits.

If Toyota had things like this figured out, they would have had better results in testing. Just read Ralf\'s recent comments blasting Toyota. Pretty embarassing for Toy...

It seems like an obvious solution to an increase in downforce with minimal drag and to me it looks like the smoothest front wing out. Pity the Toyota package is pretty pathetic with their engine only just hitting 19,000rpm at the END of last season, Mercedes, Ferrari and Cosworth all were in the mid 20,000s. And Toyota still have boxy side pods when the sculpted beautys on the Ferrari McLaren and Renault are proven to be more effecient....
