You all are forgetting that this movie is not for the ones that are already fans of F1 or motorsport in general. It is for the new fans, the ones who came with the netflix show and the expansion in USA mostly following the 2021 season finale. It will never capture the essence of F1 or why it made the current fans fall in love with it. It is just a new presentation for newer fans or casual cinema goers who have no idea how things work in F1.
Now that i've seen it, definitely maintain my opinion.
Impressive cinematography and sound design, though I think the OST was a bit phoned in. Probably would have enjoyed it a lot more if I wasn't an F1 fan, but I saw it on at the "cheap tuesday" rate so I'm not complaining.
Would be interesting to try to puzzle out the timeline of the F1 movie's alternate world.
I personally liked it, not as F1 movie but as a movie. Brad Pit was funny and he carried everything on his shoulders.
I saw it 1st time in imax laser and the image quality was great. The sound as previously was said was not great from the onboard but the old sound of the previous era cars that some times Brad was remembering or dreaming was great.
Overall it gave me a good impression and i like it, leaving aside the real F1 aspect.
I can write sheets of what was wrong in the movie as matter F1 but i had pressed myself to not see it like that and it was good.
Just saw this a few nights ago. The hype and early success had me expecting Ford Vs Ferrari levels of quality; instead, I was given something akin to Days of Thunder married to voiceovers straight from an F1 game. Over-the-top, cliche-ridden plot (with a good dose of cringe), that I supposed is aimed to provide some mindless entertainment for the uninitiated masses.
Overall I think I liked it but I do have a few considerations.
1) Not showing any qualifying seemed like a missed opportunity, you can develop the rivalry using qualy, plus it's often more dramatic than the race.
2) Waaay too much talking during driving, let people hear the noise, the heavy breathing of the driver through Eau Rouge.
3) The romance and the injury were completely useless, mostly used to introduce some tension and Sonny motivation but the team was already on the line so plenty of motivation already.
4) This is personally the one that I can forgive less, you go through eau rouge and instead of replicating what you did cinematography-wise in the opening with daytona, you keep looking sideways from the cockpit. The best race cinematography was the opening scene, I was super excited for the rest of the movie after the opening, but it was deflating.
I saw it recently. I liked it overall, but mainly due to the quality of filming racing. F1 broadcast could take some queues/camera angles from them.
As a movie the story is not that good, there are some awkward and unnecessary parts (like JPs mom suddenly changing behavior?) or the whole villain part in the end as I don't feel it added much. (minor spoiler ahead) I thought the amount of crashes between teammates was really too much.
If you want to see F1 on a big screen, with a passable filler story you should go. If you expect a great movie, look elsewhere.
I only wish they did some more of the sportscar stuff at the start. That looked great.
