Red Bull Racing RB15 speculation thread

Post

Well, Newey finally gets a split turbo PU. Will he design a chassis that takes advantage of this, or cram the turbo inlet up against the back of the fuel tank? Like McLaren did.

Will they go air-to-water like Ferrari and Merc? Or will they keep the twin air-to-air arrangement that they and STR currently have?

This year's bodywork is already incredibly compact. The RB15 could take that to a whole 'nother level again.

Bigger, simpler wings next year, with shorter bargeboards and smaller front brake duct allowances. They'll also have to ditch their blown front wheel hubs.

Honda still run the split turbo?? I thought they had to change because the effiency went up so high that the impeller size made it impossible to keep the split layout... :?:

The original Honda engine had a small compressor in the vee of the engine. The current one has a larger compressor, mounted at the front of the engine, like Mercedes.

Thats what they meant when they said "moved out of the V"!!

Thanks for the clarification, as that didnt make much sense.

A who finishes infront Red Bull Honda or Renault thread would be entertaining, although not really necessary imo.

At this point you gotta agree with Red Bull's decision.

Yip. From their point of view, it does not have to be more powerful. As long as its reliable and smaller that is a + on its own. IF Honda will work with them on placement of ancillaries and one or two other 'shape' modifiers, they are already up on the Renault. IF they get some more power out of it too, all to the good.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

I think it's clear Honda have made more progress in 2018 than Renault did.

Shorter, but longer bargeboards, the foot plate of the bargeboards will have more surface area. The cars ultimately have more potential for downforce, however they'll be stuck with more drag. Engine power will be even more important next year.

Renault has achieved 35 hp profit with Spec 2 and spec 3 together last year.

Honda has achieved 55hp profit with the spec 3.0 and spec 3.1 alone.
Add another 35 hp of the spec 2.0 and you're talking about "Delusional"?! #-o

They need to make a similar gain by the summer break next year just to get on par with the top 2.

The new regulations in addition with the switch to a different engine makes it rather difficult to foresee what might happen next year, but there's been some interesting comments about Honda and their relationship to Red bull.
Beyond reliability, Red bull clearly stated they want more power from the engine, and regardless of the solution employed, Honda shouldn't worry about its packaging and Red bull would compensate on the design of the car to accommodate more power (basically the opposite of the size zero at McLaren).
After having seen the recent Aston martin Valkyrie engine presentation, it's clearly pointed that Adrian Newey is not only guiding aero, but also very aware of engine packaging.
My point is, it's lovely from Red bull to say "do your best engine wise Honda, we can compensate on the car", but I highly doubt they would pass on the opportunity to package the car as aggressively as possible from the start.

Their packaging (in my opinion) as been causing them more issues on the Renault engine than the two other team, already in the v8 era they had reliability issues (2009, 2010). But that's most likely because they are asking more of the engine than anybody else (drilled holes during winter testing are a good example).

Based on that, are they going to keep their X-wing side-pod arrangement, make it more extreme or find something else? I do think that design allows for more freedom than a more conventional side impact structure layout.

In an ideal situation, with enough power from the engine they don't need to be that aggressive on their gearbox and internals, creating a virtuous circle of performance and reliability.
If both parties are open for mutual change, the result will be almighty on the track.

Realistically, with the one year continuous test of the engine by Torro Rosso, by now they should have a descent idea of what's what and be able to integrate it early enough in the drafting of the 2019 chassis.
