Mclaren Mercedes MP4-25

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Do not post about that air intake in this thread.
Finally! That thread was next to unreadable because of that silly snorkel discussion.

Can't you create a seperate thread for livery as well!

Interesting vid by james allen on the amount a driver contributes to development:

The most interesting bit is 1:33 in. There is a whacking great hose attached to something in the cockpit. Looks like a hydraulic hose.

Image

Is this linked to the mysterious snorkel? Or is it just for the brakes / power steering?

That logo looks (poorly) photoshopped to me. I wonder if these images are from the photo shoot they did a few weeks back.

if you look on pics on formula1.com you'll see all the teams have it mite be a data cable or more likely blowing cold air into the cockpit. saw vettel have like a circle thing connected to the end of an air hose last season that just blew air out

Looking at this picture, I notice two things which strike me as out of the ordinary.

1. The triangle blip on top of the tub, dead centre a few inches in front of the steering wheel... Looks like the section facing the driver is open/hollow. Could this be an air outlet perhaps?

2. The section of the tub between the triangular bit mentioned above looks a bit rough. It kind of looks like it's got a strip of silver duct tape on it.

Any ideas people?

look at the same spot on the pic in the link im guessing its separating the airflow to go around the helmet easier instead of just fully hitting the front part of the helmet (just guessing) but they have been on the cars for a fair few years

It's a camera getting faceshots of the driver during the race.

quite interesting the smile on the boffins faces ..when it comes to just how much the driver contributes to laptime.
the ultimate statement is:if the driver feels comfortable and confident he id going fast ,as fast as possible.and the main asset is his feedback to hint in possible directions where lap time could be found as he the drivers could do something if the car would support him doing this...

in a word ,drivers are like tyres/tires...you need them, but nobody has a clou about just how to extract the maximum out of them...

that hose looks like the supply line to the reservoir of the brake master cyl for pressurized brake bleeding .These brakesystems can be a real pain in the ass to bleeding....and with carbon brakes and hot stops you will easily boil or degrade the fluid so it is not the worst idea to have fresh fluid at all times in the system.

the camera compartment doubles up as vortex generator but is this new?

Yes, I think you're right. The 23 had it...

But the 24 did not...

Well, what about a thread for piston number 3 and another for the brake pedal? If we can write 360 posts about an alleged switch that has no pictures that I know... Three... hundred... and... sixty (and counting!).

Pup is right, the car is kind of silver. Perhaps they should have changed the name to The Silver Barrows.

Is this the first time since forever that McLaren use steering wheel mounted dash?

I have never been entirely sure what this little triangle is for, but saw it used on an episode of Top Gear (or maybe 5th Gear) where one of the presenters was to drive an F1 car and they placed a straight edge between the triangle and the top of the rollover hoop/airbox to ensure that the driver's head would be safe in the event of a rollover.

But, having looked at a stack of images, it seems that this element has always been very slim until this picture, which of course might be an early press shot or something?

Look at the following image for an example:
