Apparently they told Lewis that the outlap should be normal...
Was just about to post about this. What a strange situation.
Boxing to undercut someone then having a normal outlap? What is this? Lewis' first race? Rookie mistake.
Vibes were strange this weekend, thats for sure. Maybe its to be expected

Dont think you can blame Lewis here, he's told to pit, gets out of the pits and is told by Bono "outlap normal, laptimes should come to you", a bit later he tells Lewis target 16:0 (which he gets close to at the end of the lap). When Lewis is in the tunnel he asks how hard to push, Bono says "yea just push....like Suzuka". After he completes the lap and sees Max still ahead he asks why he wasnt told it was critical, for the next minute of the clip Bono says nothing.

Toto also saying the team messed up the message to Lewis- https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/wolf ... /10616220/

"It should have been an 'out-lap critical', trying to undercut.

"But then there was a debate whether any out-lap would be enough from the new tyre. And so the message he got was at best confusing but probably wrong.

"It should have been an out-lap critical and the worry in the background was that if we thrashed that tyre in a single lap, then what would happen later.

"But in summary wrong message to Lewis, this was the team's fault."

What should be great new upgrades in Canada for Mercedes?

It wasn't immediately obvious that Max would pit. He only pitted after speeding up to right behind George and ensuring he had the gap.

Not even entirely sure why Mercedes pitted Hamilton at all. Just another weird decision from them like George in Imola.

It was a free stop to get rid of (possibly marginal) mediums and replace with nearly new hards. Would have been daft not to do it once the gap back to the follow cars got so big.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Er, team mistake as Toto confirmed.

They haven't said, all that's confirmed is Lewis getting the same front wing, I'm sure AMuS or someone will report what's coming before the GP weekend

I think everyone has forgotten about the multiple podiums his team just didn't show up to last season. To the point where it was only Ferrari mechanics congratulating him one time.

Makes you wonder.

Mercs twitter account was getting bashed in every direction by fans wondering what the heck was going on.

There is not a single chance in hell Lewis is in on the technical meetings or is being
given any info on his the car is supposed to work at its best.

How can they be worried that the hard might be ruined if he pushes it hard on the outlap? They had just gone extremely long on the mediums, so the hard was always gonna last, and even if it didn’t, he could limp back without being overtaken anyway. Who was gonna overtake him? They literally had this one opportunity to get by and they wasted it. Silly.

Maybe someone with more knowledge in this stuff will correct me but the explanation doesn't make much sense to me, him pushing all out for one lap on hards that went around the track once, half of that during a red flag wouldn't have ruined his tires, he was doing multiple laps in the 1:14's with his fastest being a 1:14:1 and still made it to the end, idk why Bono told him to aim for a 1:16:0

I think we're just not used to seeing Lewis being treated like a no.2 driver although I'm willing to bet George's contract since 2022 has him as no.1 driver.

Remember how the no.1 driver always had the blue T cam until 2022

Lewis changed it to yellow to match his helmet

Interesting development brewing under the surface, Its becoming obvious that the teams short comings over the years are rearing its ugly head. Now with the fact there actively alienating Lewis on purpose(Yes im going there as there finishing 4th in the WCC anyway) this will end up turning into a bitter divorce. Judging by what ive seen on Social media outlets. Team LH will beat there drums sooner than later.

The thing with Lewis is he will lose his composure when he feels his own team is against him. It happened in McLaren which made him post that telemetry data back in 2012 after Spa qualifying. Its pretty much the only way to destabilise him off track that will eventually effect his on track mentality. The team not turning up to his podiums on the back end of last year was only the start of it lool....

Lewis is in quite quitting mode. The whole " I wont beat Russell in qualy " is due to him not really sorting out his issues in qualy because hes moving and will get locked out of car development, setup input eventually. His pessimistic interview about the next grand prix spoke volumes aswell. Interesting times ahead for Merc and Lewis. Its getting toxic quickly while Russell's having his best year in merc colours so far (Even the car livery suits his Blue helmet and gloves lmaooo)
“And that’s part of the game, is being able to be adaptive, and we’ve got this new car – I don’t know how it’s going to handle, hopefully she’s great.”

Don't understand why Merc is handling the situation like this...
