finished 15s behind. Leclerc had much better pace again, just like in Silverstone. Lewis was lucky Max was holding Charles on the beginning. With clean air, Hamilton just fell behind. Idk if Hamilton had significant damage from the crash in which he destroyed Russell´s race but Leclerc also crashed into Piastri (should have been punished as well and both with more than 5s but FIA wants Ferrari in the championship...) and could have carried damage from that as well

Another tough weekend for Hamilton. He desperately needs to bounce back on the next GP which is one of his best tracks, otherwise it will get ominous for him
Lewis challenged Charles during the first stint and was the fastest car on track during the second stint at one point, all with a bargeboard missing. People coming in the thread ever week no matter the result just to --- on a driver is so annoying
Lewis overtook Oscar on lap 9.
Charles was driving right behind Max the whole time and Max was holding him back.
Max pitted on lap 18.
VSC came out on lap 20; Charles, after just two laps in clear air, had opened up a 4-second lead over Lewis...

It’s the same situation as with Sainz: he was attacking Charles on the first few laps, suggesting he was faster, but after a few laps, as his tyres wore out more, his pace dropped like a stone.

second stint, at the end of the VSC:
Hamilton gap to Charles 12s
end of the race 15s

end of the disccussion...
Hehe, of course HAM was faster behind LEC!
He had huge slipstream, AND the boost mode!!
Every decent driver will be faster than their team mate just behind them, because of those 2 reasons.

I do not care who was actually faster, but in this case, HAM was only faster in those moments. Whenever he was a bit more behind, he was not. And hopefully this was exactly what Ferrari saw in the data, 10000x better than we.

you failed to mention that Hams left bargeboard was broken off, and they couldnt dial the wing during his stop.
those 2 areas alone can account for the pace deficit especially if you need some time to adjust to a sub optimal set up after a failed pit stop. Also dont forget because of the accident at the stop Ham also lost another 2+ seconds and to top it all off hes driving an nonoptimized car due to his FP3 crash which he openly admitted to. meanwhile, lec had his optimal car setup and just drove his race.

the fact is, ever since his FP3 crash we all knew that it would be a recovery drive for ham for the race. it only became worse after being tagged at the start with bargeboard damage, an unjust penalty and a botched pitstop that left his car with understeer. Unless theres divine intervention like last race, P4 was always going to be the best result.

yea its disappointing that it wasnt a 1-2 or 2-3 but sometimes its really irritable when people are desperate to be glass half empty and scraping the bottom of the barrel to find whatever metrics to prove their point.

Leclerc also wasn’t thrilled with his car by the end of the race: issues with shifts between gears 1-2, and apparently he wasn’t happy with his wing level, either.

Two tracks in a row that didn’t suit Ferrari. Expectations exceeded. Nice job, team! Let’s keep it up.

It has been hard to work out what to expect. Monaco was supposed to be asclose to certain as we could get for a victory.

I feel wasn't a chassis thing but a traction thing. What do we think Hungary will demand more of?

They really need to outlaw machine learning or any other kind of algorithm that determines the deployment and have it purely as a response to a driver command (i would favour some kind of button but could be mapped to the throttle per Gary Anderson’s suggestion). Tbh the regulations *already* prohibit this: “the driver must drive the car alone and unaided” is a very broad regulation but if there’s ever been a time to invoke this catch-all, it’s now.

Not strictly a Ferrari topic but Leclerc was moaning about it [albeit not as much as Russell!] and I personally think it’s a much bigger issue than all the moaning about push-to-pass overtakes or de-rating. Those are the same for everyone all the time - this randomly kicks in whenever it fancies it and is fundamentally undermining the human element of the sport.
Driving the car means directing the car over the track, it is not about how much power the driver has access to at any given time.. Which is what the ECU does. The driver then operates the throttle to access that power.

If the car was adjusting throttle on its own, then now that is aiding the driver!

Going by the damage and bad wing settings, I believe Lewis would have had the stronger race pace here, but it's really academic. There is no solid proof. The good news is that both drivers are pushing each other.

They aren't running anything fancy, because realistically they can't. The ECU is equivalent to a Raspberry Pi 4B with regard to processing power. In my opinion, they are likely using multi-dimensional lookup tables/maps to try and determine where they are on the track and thus how they should regen and deploy. However, unlike the previous regulation set, the electrical system is ~50% of the total power output, so any issue, even a momentary one, is glaringly apparent.

I agree. They are seriously limited in the car by the electronics they have.
The problems which appear at every team shows, they have problems in determining where is the car on the track.
The relatively simple system can be fooled by the driver taking a corner differently, driving differently basically confuses the system, so the power deployment will be inappropriate to the current location of the car.
However I think they still have a method to reset in every lap, as I see they mostly have such problems for less than a lap.

Still, I do not think that the sport, and especially the viewer needs this kind of complexity. This is simply useless from this point of view.
I would love if F1 would take out all such driver aid electronics. It would even work with the current regulation, drivers could use electrical power and charging by their own, using buttons or pedals...
I do not understand why the FIA does not realise, they only need to have anything if it benefits the viewer and the purity of racing.

Imo, the problem itself isn't complex, one FIA rule makes it a complex problem.
B1.8.1 The driver must drive the F1 Car alone and unaided.
If the teams could use gps data to determine where the car is on track these issue would likely go away almost overnight.

With the above rule in place they can only use data that is directly or indirectly under the control of the driver.
  • speed
  • throttle %
  • brake %
  • RPM
  • Gear
  • SM mode status
  • SM mode open duration
  • the ES's current state of charge
  • etc
The limitations of the ECU, the regulations (technical & sporting), and most significantly the ridiculously small capacity of the ES is why the teams are having the issues they are.

Under the old rules electrical energy recovery and deployment was far simpler.
  • ES capacity was 4MJ(same as it is this season)
  • MGU-K max harvesting was 2MJ/lap
  • MGU-K max deployment was 4MJ/lap
  • MGU-K max harvesting and deployment rate was 120kW
  • MGU-H max harvesting was unlimited
  • MGU-H max deployment was unlimited
  • MGU-H max harvesting was unlimited
The ES's capacity was equivalent to the maximum amount of power allowed to be deployed per lap by the MGU-K. Additionally, whenever the turbo achieved maximum allowed boost, the MGU-H acted as a generator, topping off the ES. Thus, teams did not need to track the car's precise position on the circuit; everything was directly tied to ICE maps and deployment modes.

If the ES had been something like 0.5 to 1MJ, then you would see the exact same problem they have this season.

The curiosity: how meals are managed during race weekends
On the eve of the last race before the summer break, Ferrari has spread some curiosities about the organization of the team's meals during the grands prix, through the statements of Daniele Cerrito, catering manager of the Maranello team: "To ensure optimal organization, nothing can be left to chance. The choice of people to work with is the most important aspect, but also the one that requires the most attention. The necessary starting point is to be able to count on a close-knit team, in which everyone knows their role perfectly and works in harmony with the others. To succeed you need communication, trust and attention to detail".

The menu varies from circuit to circuit, following the seasonality but also connecting to the place where the race takes place: "A week before each Grand Prix we define the menu together with the chef, so we can select and order fresh, quality ingredients. We always try to maintain a strong Italian identity, which is part of Ferrari's DNA, but whenever possible we also like to includesome specialties of the country that hosts us. At the same time, we pay great attention to the nutritional needs of the team, because we know how important it is to eat the right way during a race weekend. The goal is simple: to make everyone feel at home, offering quality cuisine that best accompanies the team's work".
