Despite the update AMUS think we will be battling AR/AM and even Williams..

They need to find bigger steps.
It is really the end of the road for this 2019 car to be honest.
Why spend too much time on this? Let’s work on 2022
They are but the updates they have brought have already been in the pipeline for a while. In this early part of the season it’s not going to make you weaker next year if you improve your simulations and prove out your development processes on a current car.

I think they’ll only be one more update to this car and that’s it. They won’t chase the updates all year for obvious reasons. But they can still improve performance in other ways that don’t hinder next year.

This is exactly what I was talking about.. imagine this happens in 2022 if they don’t get to the bottom of it..

Alpine F1 car hindered by wind tunnel problem
The French car manufacturer has slipped back against its main rivals this year, and it left the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix without scoring any points.

While the team is hopeful that an aggressive upgrade push can lift it up the grid, its executive director Marcin Budkowski says its difficulties can be traced back to troubles at the factory.

Reflecting on a challenging time at both the Bahrain test and race, Budkowski said: "Going into the test, we knew we experienced some headwind during the winter with some of the regulation changes, but also we had a few issues in the wind tunnel that slowed us in terms of development.

"We knew we didn't have the best possible winter. And therefore we were expecting to be on the back foot in terms of pace.

"Testing kind of confirmed that. We did make progress during the test with a few things we tested, they were an improvement, but we were on the back foot."

Budkowski added that while Alpine's pace in Bahrain was not a surprise, what did catch the team out was which teams emerged as its main challengers.

"Interestingly, we ended up pretty much where we thought we would end up," he said. "But we got a wrong one on some of the cars that were in front of us and some of the cars that ended up behind us.

"But I don't think that we were the only ones, because talking to a few team management members from other teams, it seems that quite a few people saw the order to be a little bit different to what we saw at the race. But that's just a matter of order in terms of competitiveness, if you want, compared to the front."

Alpine has brought an upgrade package to Imola in a bid to improve its fortunes, which includes a new front wing and nose design.

Budkowski said that update had been planned for a while, but other developments were now being ramped up in the wake of its competitive situation.

"We're pushing hard to try to improve our performance and that is clear from the number of upgrades we are bringing here," he said.

"We are further behind than we'd like to be, so it's going to take a bit more than a few upgrades. And then I don't expect everybody else is waiting for us to bring upgrades, so everybody is going to improve their cars.

"It's a relative race. It looks like the car is going to progress this weekend with the upgrades we're bringing, but we've got more work to do in the next few races to bring a bit more."

It’s not all bad news though because the updates here at least worked.

Kind of disappointing....If atleast they would have spent an inordinate amout of time on the 2022 car ...no, just not tunnel time cause of issues.

There is a slim chance Alonso set the car up for (quite) possible rain tomorrow - he has nothing to lose. Esteban is good in wet conditions as well.

It's not going to rain, it may sprinkle in the morning, but the weather should be as it has been the last two days. Very dissapointed that Alonso is coming back to an even less competitive situation than he was in 2018, but now he has a faster team mate, and Alpine isn't going to nerf Ocon's car to make Alonso look good.

Alonso has said himself he needs to improve more than the car. He’s been out for two years and Ocon has a year experience with the car and team. Ricciardo was about the same behind Lando before landos lap got deleted and he’s not even had any time off.

But take nothing away from Ocon he put in a great lap and was also out qualifying Ricciardo in the last couple of races last year.

I hope it’s not another reliability issue like Bahrain. They were evenly matched in FP3.

The Q3 lap from Ocon didn’t look too bad. Still a bit too big of a gap to what Landos lap could have been but if the car updates are working it’s not all bad.

Once Alonso finds his feet they would look pretty decent.
