Nando does not make the field for the Indy 500 today (quali for top 30 slots). Tomorrow he still has a chance to claim one of 3 last row slots on "bump day".

It was looking pretty dire for him going into qualifying with all the time he lost on track this week. I hope he makes one of those 3 slots!

It is important to note that this may be the tightest field in the Races's history.

Alonso screwed himself sticking by Mclaren.
Oval setups are extremely complex, you aren't setting up front and rear, you are setting up the 4 corners of the car.
Same thing about aero, every ,0001 of drag brought by an incorrect setting costs a huge deal.

Last time he tried he was part of a 5 car team and a very experienced team at that, with years of data and knowledge.

Hopefully he understands that and gives Roger Penske a call for next year.

Cannot agree more. It is basically embarrassing that McLaren IndyCar team. They rushed it IMHO, and they really can't compete with teams running in the series for years now. The ironic thing is I think it's gonna take them just as long as it takes McLaren F1 team to reach the top of the grid to come to the grips with IndyCar! #-o
By the way what's with McLaren and all this nostalgia thing? Just because they won the 500 a billion years ago doesn't make them true contenders for the win this year. It is based on the exact same philosophy they used when signing with Honda in 2015.
Funny thing is Alonso won Monaco with Renault in 2006 (I know he won in 2007 with McLaren, but he had already won it), 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota in 2018. McLaren were not involved in any of those, maybe just allowing him to drive for Toyota in 2018, but considering the F1 car they had I don't think they had any other choice but to let him race for them. His efforts for taking the Triple Crown with McLaren leads to nowhere by the looks of it.

All Carlin cars at the back too.

I got the impression that if he had qualified earlier in the day he might have got some free speed from the track/weather conditions, enough to qualify high enough to make it in (like Kimball could). Qualifying around 2-3pm seemed terrible for everyone that tried.

looks like that Alonso's push away from Honda to be able to race for Toyota is coming back to bite him now.

...maybe, even Roger has been caught "out/looking in", but pairing oneself with a group of 500 specialists would have been the right call. I cannot understand why he did not do Andretti again...the Honda thing i guess???

I have been intrigued by ECR's success in this race and really enjoy listening to Ed's insight...not racing other cars, just viewing it as a timed race event. This has gotten him closer than most.

I think McLaren may have underestimated the effort necessary to get a proper IndyCar entry up and running. Combine this with the field being very close and it could be disastrous for them this year. While it is a so called spec series, there is a lot of things a team can do within the regulations that makes some faster especially at super speedways. I don't know how much help they received from the other teams overnight but its going to be close this afternoon.
