Speaking of Liam Lawson: The New Zealander joined the Racing Bulls team after just two race weekends, while Yuki Tsunoda was promoted. Why didn't you choose this lineup last year?

For a long time, Yuki had the image of not performing consistently and making silly mistakes here and there. That's what happened last year in Mexico, where the decisive phase for us began. With Lawson, it was the exact opposite at first: he came on and delivered straight away, no matter how great the pressure was. In retrospect, however, it wasn't the right decision. In general, however, a lot can be traced back to a single incident. [In Silverstone 2022], Tsunoda drove into Pierre Gasly's car, and parts of the cars on the track damaged the underbody of Verstappen's car, which cost him the race. Adrian Newey was furious at the time. From that point on, Yuki was a red rag to him. But now Newey is gone, and Yuki has worked hard on himself.

In this regard, you repeatedly spoke about the discrepancy between simulation and actual behavior on the track, and the wind tunnel was also a recurring topic. What is the current situation?

Our existing wind tunnel is a relic from the 1940s and was built by the military. Although it has been adapted several times, it still has the disadvantage of being very long and having exposed concrete pipes. When it's cool or hot outside, it's difficult for us to achieve the necessary temperatures. The new wind tunnel is under construction and is scheduled for completion in 2026. The aforementioned discrepancy was sometimes very confusing last year, so we've been working on it. However, we don't know exactly where the translation error lies.

That sounds childish on Newey's part, if that indeed is true. He is someone that has seen the far more disgusting on track behavior from drivers like Senna, Vettel and Max that all drove his cars. A young Yuki making mistakes makes him a pariah?

The Marshalls should have yellow flagged or safety car to clear the debris. The past is the past, Newey probably has gotten over it by now. At least now that it's out in the open he can be retrospective about it.

That's as pathetic an excuse as it can get. Don't know whether it was Newey himself or Marko got the english translation into german wrong (or whether Marko is simply making it up).

However, we don't know exactly where the translation error lies.

In China they dropped the ball for the first time, especially Lando Norris. But at the moment McLaren are the clear favorites with two strong drivers and a strong car.”

So what still needs to happen for Red Bull to challenge McLaren? Marko says: “We need to deliver upgrades quickly that actually work. Of course, they come in groups and if something doesn’t work, we will have to fix it. But to win the world championship, these improvements definitely need to be implemented in the next five races. Otherwise it will be too late.”

It's working. Ten days ago all anyone was talking about was how disastrous Liam Lawson was, now they just want to talk about Marko and Horner being ruthless. Liam has effectively snuck out the back door of a crime scene and no one is looking for him anymore. The media and detractors who were hounding him are now hounding RB management instead. And does anyone here think that Liam would have had a job in this sport after 24 races in the RB21 next to Max, after that start? Now Liam's future is back in his own hands for 22 races.

Nonetheless, whether they succeeded or not, Horner and Marko now realize that the focus is on them, and they try these outright dumb tactics to deflect. The latest from Horner is that it was ”the engineers” that came to him and voiced concerns, so he more or less had to do it, absolving himself partially of the blame or at least dragging others with him. Just own up to the mess that is your driver program instead. Say that yes, it’s not working and we have a big problem to solve. It would give them at least some respect in this situation.

The Race Just because they put "verdict" in their articles it doesn't mean they are the judge and jury of F1, though I'm sure they would like that.

The problem is two fold. On the one hand you have a difficult car and teammate. One of those (the car) can be partially blamed on management (though it's really a consequence of engineers pushing for performance). But the other half of the issue was very much Liam. The car being difficult and Max being good doesn't excuse him being last in quali a second behind Max, that's way too far. But this kind of ties in to my point, by swapping the drivers Horner and Marko have put the crosshairs squarely on themselves and Liam is being absolved of all responsibility even when he shouldn't be. The media have gone from talking about how he's last every quali session to trying to convince us by "verdict" that his own performance had nothing to do with those results, because it's "all the fault of management". I've got a beach house to sell you in Idaho if you believe that drivel. Liam was very much part of the problem, so is the car being difficult, so is the fact that every new guy has to measure himself against a ridiculous benchmark in Max. Either way I think Liam is better off back at VCARB, for his career.

I never ever said that Lawson is not part of the problem. He very much is. It would be a much wiser choice to start with Tsunoda from the beginning, even though I expect him to only fair marginally better and dice with the midfield himself. He likely won’t put a dent in the other top teams anyhow, which is what Red Bull expects him to. When he fails, what then? Hadjar?

Even if they deflected slightly from Lawson, anyone can see that he won’t have a sniff at a top drive ever again and will only be a seat filler for the rest of his F1 career. But thanks for ”saving him”. And even if they tried to put the crosshairs on themselves, they are now trying to sell us that Newey had a part in it and other crap. They can try to deflect all they want, but the fact remains that other teams can build very good cars which two drivers can drive very quickly. Red Bull can’t, and they won’t succeed with anyone in the other seat if they cannot address that. So this mess will only repeat itself.

And just out of curiosity, since you laugh at The Race (which was just a random example) who is the ”judge and jury” of F1? Who did you have in mind?

Yuki can get a podium. It'a not physically impossible. He will fly high or crash and burn.

Anything can happen in motor racing... and it usually does!

Yuki talking now is him psyching up himself. I think come qualifying he will befully focused and I hope his handlers keep the media away. Yuki has implosion tendencies and that wont change overnight.

For those of you ragging on Yuki having a big mouth, you most likely didn't watch the setting in which he made these remarks in Japanese. These translations have no context in which he was saying this. He was at the Honda Aoyama HQ on the final day before they were to close the venue for renovations and he was sat along side his junior carting coach. He himself said he had to be realistic about his chances but he was approaching the weekend no different than if he would have been if he were in the VCARB, but that with Red Bull the car is capable of a podium being that it IS THE TOP Red Bull team. His goal to be on the podium is because he feels if he can extract the potential of the RB21 and be comfortable with it, he should aim to be on the podium, considering how strong Max has been at Suzuka in prior years. He acknowledges he won't have the same set up as Max and that he wants to build up the weekend from FP1 and if he can be confident in the car then the results should come, and if that results in a podium it would be a fitting and ideal end for Honda, RBR and the fans. He feels the stars have aligned and there is no greater pressure than for this occasion and relishes in it, this is what he has been preparing himself for. He said himself there probably won't be another chance or experience that would top his nerves ever in his life and he can't guarantee a podium but that is what he has to aim for at this event. He asks for everyone to cheer him on and not to tell him to take it easy, but instead pile up the expectations on him. I hope he has his latte before the race and is wired up because he still is experiencing jetlag and the Red Bull show run was a good wake up exercise for him. Good luck Yuki, we're cheering you on.
