He's not chatty during FP or Q, but he is during the race. That's probably how it ought to be.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Pretty sure there is some issues with these numbers. The detection is done with an AI transcription program which detects signal to noise.. and I think for De Vries for instance it hasn't detected all of his radios as radios.

I think if people are here looking at and debating how many times somebody used the radio, it's a good representation of how boring this one-horse season is.

It's very sad that at the end of 2021 the racing was actually close. They change the rules, one team cheats the budget, happily takes the non-penalty and now we are stuck with a zero championship battle for at least 3 years.

Fun times.

All this talk about which driver is better (at using the radio?), let's also mention that their soft-medium-soft tyre choice apparently was the best one (that's what Red Bull said, and they are always totally honest, especially if that can help them imply that Merc certainly didn't gain a lot, but even so, it did appear so from others races too), and while their pit stops remain a lot more conservative than Red Bulls, at the least their race team has remained a strength.

Sure others dropping the ball helped Mercedes, but when one doesn't have the fastest car, that's the best way to get results and points on the table, and the team has been doing that during the last two races. It all gives a solid basis to evaluate and evolve the new updates. Then we can look at which driver gets closest to actually fighting for podiums and maybe even wins.

The team had a solid weekend for a change - did plenty of work to assess the upgrade package, did some comparison work with the rear wing, ran their race strategies well, maximised their points haul - indeed, they got more than they probably should as Sergio really ought to have fought through to P2 in that rocket ship of a car.

All-in-all, a good weekend for the Merc team.

Completely agree. Of course, the forum remains busy because it’s a ‘technical forum’, and there is stuff to discuss, but from a racing point of view, this season has been nothing short of terrible. Wheel to wheel racing has been pretty much non-existent.

Just have to hope Mercedes can get their act together for 24’, however, I feel it will be more like 25’, before anyone remotely challenges RB.

Why is that the teams that have done a lousy job with the new regulations doesn't get the flak and all that gets swept under the carpet with the garb of one team breaching a minor cost cap and blame FIA for the routine job they do with regulations change since decades? For a change, let's ask what are the other teams doing with 140 million dollars and billions worth of infrastructure built over years.

Realistically, does anyone with decent understanding of F1, believe for a moment that if another teams spends 400k (or 2.5 million, whichever suits your sensibilities), can remove the deficit to Red Bull, incur penalty and fight for championship? Good luck with that.

Did some team leaders not say 2.5 million was half its season budget for development?

" “We don’t feel a financial penalty alone would be a suitable penalty for a overspend breach or a serious procedural breach, there clearly needs to be a sporting penalty in these instances, as determined by the FIA.

“We suggest that the overspend should be penalised by way of a reduction to the team’s cost cap in the year following the ruling and the penalty should be equal to the overspend plus a further fine i.e. an overspend of $2M in 2021, which is identified in 2022, would result in a $4M deduction in 2023 ($2M to offset the overspend plus $2M fine).

“For context $2M is 25 – 50% upgrade to annual car development budget and hence would have a significant positive and long lasting benefit.”"

Ofc, i wouldnt take Zak Browns word for it, i dont think he has a good understanding of f1.

But in light of that, 2.5 million is not minor.

obviously its impossible to replicate this advantage but what they did in 2021 sowed the seeds to their current success. that in combination of ferrari flopping what wouldve been a close battle gave red bull the breathing room it needs this year.

From Merc's Spain debrief that is posted on their youtube channel. Quotes from Shov about Canada:
"The fact is that the update kit works very well around circuits like Barcelona with a lot of high-speed performance," Shovlin said in Mercedes' post-race debrief on Wednesday.

"We've been better at the fast circuits and the front-limited tracks. We ended up with a really good balance and really good race pace.

"Now, where we are going to go next week, Montreal, it's a very different circuit. There are more low-speed corners, quite a lot of straight-line full throttle and we would expect more of a challenge there.
"We are not thinking that we are going in nipping at the heels of Red Bull. We are aware that Canada is likely to be a bigger challenge than the Sunday we just had in Barcelona."
"We are thinking it will be more along the lines of some of the earlier races where we were definitely in the bunch with Ferrari, with Aston, and now Alpine look to have joined that group," he explained.

"But it's great racing there. It will be good fun and we are certainly going to be fighting to find every little bit of performance we can.
