Lateral force on tyres

Post

How lateral force on tyres builds up during transient steady of corner?

I am read that on the rear axle lateral force builds up with lag when car turn in corner while on the front axle lateral force develops immediately.
Relaxation length of tyre also influenceы on responce at entry in corner.

Relaxation length applies to both ends. I think you are reading about the way that (ignoring RL) the front tires develop a lateral force in direct response to the steer angle, but the rear axle has to wait until the vehicle has developed a yaw angle before they can develop a lateral velocity and so start to generate a lateral force.

That's called the yaw delay time, about 100 ms as a starting point.

So the exact sequence (ha) is
  • driver turns steering wheel

steering column and steering gear and suspension mass and compliance add a delay time

    hub of road wheel steers

carcase of tire twists and finally points belt in the right direction (this is your relaxation length)

front tire develops a slip velocity and so generates a lateral force

front axle accelerates sideways (governed by body inertia etc)

    front axle velocity builds

    front axle displacement builds

Car body now has a yaw angle

rear axle picks this yaw angle up via compliances and masses

hub of rear road wheel steers

carcase of tire twists and finally points belt in the right direction (this is your relaxation length)

rear tire develops a slip velocity and so generates a lateral force

    rear axle accelerates sideways
That's probably wrong in detail but includes everything I can think of this morning.
