Ferrari F1 2018 car Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter does not belong here.

Some more rumors from italian italian newspaper:

http://autosprint.corrieredellosport.it ... _che_verr/

short translation:
About PU: fixes for TC 2017 reliability issues. Efficiency gains by modifying turbine and software. ERS radiator will be bigger and moved a little ahead

Sidepods changes: air intake should be bigger and moved a bit down, to reduce drag. There will be changes in flow conditioners in front of air intake.

Wheelbase should be longer than 2017 car.
There is an interesting rumor in that link. "Ferrari has found the way, with a particoular cynicism, to lower the set-up of the car during the interval of curves. That would help to increase the load and decrease understeer in fast corners and in narrower turns."
This solution was rejected by the Fia in according to article.

On his blog, Leo Turrini just wrote about the three key elements for the newcoming Ferrari:

1. a great effort had been directed to build a lighter PU package (including batteries, accessories), to keep up with Mercedes standards in this field.

2. a lot of work had been done to get out more power from the PU, who is rumoured to have reached peaks of 1.000 HP during static testings (a level already - and effectively - reached by Mercedes during the 2017 season); it is the same big step they expected to have in the middle of last summer (when Lorenzo Sassi was fired from the Maranello based team), and that ultimately had never been true.

3. aerodinamically, it is said they have seen a 'huge' ooops... no, I meant just an 'important' improvement according to the wind tunnel data (of course, to be verified once on track).

Isn't it an important step, aerodynamically, rather than a huge one?

Well, if all 3 are true then Seb Vet will be able to write WDC 5 on his name.

News of 1000 hp achieved during static testing is pure Ferrari hype. Static test vs. race trim if totally different. On top, as per the regulation changes this year teams are limited to only 3 pu's. So even higher engine reliability requirement. I doubt the car will have anywhere near 1000 hp for race setup.

Merc also doesn't probably get 1000 bhp in race trim. But if Ferrari can match the Merc quali mode, then that would certainly help

Ah shame there’s no video like with the Mercedes that we can pour over and come up with theories! :D

They went full Buick. Nice of them to put extra filtering on the audio so we can't pick out fine details. :x

Very short translation:

2018 starting engine should have more or less same power as last 2017 engine, but should last 7 races. Important developments should follow during the season.

(Translated with google translator)

Ferrari: promoted the 2018 engine that has the duration of the 7 GPs!
Positive indications from the power unit come from Maranello, which at the counter would have reached a useful life to respect the constraints of the 3 power units during the season. Now a new headline is coming to increase performance.
Ferrari are very busy: the engine that will start the 2018 season would have reached the reliability to last 7 GP. In the Sports Management the fire up of the engine mounted on the new Red was welcomed with satisfaction, although the first two set in motion have failed. Nothing serious: just a mumble before the liberating scream, because the bench tests have yielded positive results.

The 2018 machine with a slightly longer wheelbase than last year is said to be very good at the canvas and aerodynamic level, while some doubts concern the duration of the power unit.

If you consider that the V6 Turbo that will be mounted on the new Red starting from the test of Barcelona maintains a close acquaintance with the unit signed 063 that played last season, it seems clear that the engineers directed by Corrado Iotti have done a great job to extend the life of a powerplant that was struggling to complete 5 GPs in 2017.

The chapter of the "burned" oil that characterized last year was closed definitively by the FIA, when the lubricants were used in an excessive way to bring in the combustion chamber the forbidden additives in the petrol (it is rumored that there were those who last year he also added methanol to the anti-knock!), getting a "mixture" that allowed to significantly increase the power in some laps (we talked about 60 horses).
Therefore, the Cavallino motorists decided to take a step back, before making a longer one forward. The 2018 engine, at least at the beginning of the season, will be in line with the power of last year, while it should count on an important development during the championship, when a new warhead will be available that was designed specifically to exacerbate the pre -combustion and the prevailing concept of Tji to challenge the Mercedes even in the dry lap in qualifying.

The 6-cylinder turbo, however, will not have the pistons in steel alloy, as it should have been at the end of last season on the engine 4. The solution that was to be one of the cornerstones of the engine of Lorenzo Sassi was not adopted, as well as the project that was signed 064 and that was aborted in early summer.

The well-known Tuscan technician, who will soon be serving Brixworth at the Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrain as soon as the gardening period expires, has adopted very strong solutions that did not give the results of reliability that the dt Mattia Binotto expected, so the its 6-cylinder was shelved and the 2018 engine was not born from a new project, but from the revised engine 2017.
