All the same, in cycling, motocross etc. They also did away with the podium girls. For the exact same reason as the gridgirls, where you expecting something else?

Blick claims the decision to stop using grid girls in F1 came from above Chase Carey: the call apparently came from Liberty Media president and CEO Greg Maffei whose wife Sharon objected to the practice after seeing it first hand during last year's United States Grand Prix.

Blame her.

How do you explain other sports (moto cross, road cycling) with similar "girls as eye candy" functions also dropping them?

OR
Collective behavior which refers to social processes and events which do not reflect existing social structure, but which emerge in a "spontaneous" way and generally violates societal norms and can be tremendously silly, as with fads.. Collective behavior is always driven by group dynamics, encouraging people to engage in acts they might consider unthinkable under typical social circumstances

Emergent norm theory states that crowds have little unity at their outset, but during a period of milling about, key members suggest appropriate actions, and following members fall in line, forming the basis for the crowd's norms.
Key members are identified through distinctive personalities or behaviors. These garner attention, and the lack of negative response elicited from the crowd as a whole stands as tacit agreement to their legitimacy. The followers form the majority of the mob, as people tend to be creatures of conformity who are heavily influenced by the opinions of others.

OR
The Social identity theory posits that the self is a complex system made up primarily of the concept of membership or non-membership in various social groups. These groups have various moral and behavioral values and norms, and the individual's actions depend on which group membership (or non-membership) is most personally salient at the time of action. :)

Of course she will, ladies of all sizes and shapes are welcome (if they have a pass) and can dress whichever way they choose, it is just that mandatorily standing there holding an umbrella, or sign etc. for the sake of being eye candy is no longer being done.

They've not stopped women from attending grand prix nor being on the grid during the run up.
