The difficult thing to understand is how McLaren, despite having a dog of a car, is one of the most copied teams on the grid.
Some good concepts, but in the end it takes everything to work well together.
I believe McLaren in this case is a victim of their philosophy. They hold themselves so high that they turned blind and become victims of short term quick fix 'We are MCLAREN' type of mindset. Yes they have the tools, the money, the people (technical) and facilities, but their mindset is so detested to 'RIGHT F...ING NOW' that in most cases they're overdoing it. Zero-Size, New Honda Marriage, ditch the Honda get in bed with Renault, bring overly complicated stuff on their car they so desperately want to quick short-cut directly to the front.

You see Mercedes since 2010 they've been working and keeping the same philosophy, always planning ahead and being consistent and keeping what works rather than 'what looks it should be working'. Their project is long term, whereas McLaren is very focused on the short term.

Fortunately, Monaco is a place where a good driver can make a difference even if the car is not top notch, so hoping Alonso can put the car p5/p6
I dont think that Alonso is particularly mighty on this track but I take it for granted that he will be in Q3.
On the contrary, I think he's pretty good around Monaco
I remember him being pretty average with Ferrari.

I don't think he is outstanding in Monaco, but pretty good like on many other tracks. Only Trulli outqualified him two times, but also Massa set a faster lap in Q 2012 than Alonso, but was slower in Q3. Button was faster in Q1 2015, Alonsos car failed in Q2, hard to compare what would have happened.

Apparently they don't even use their own wind tunnel because it's outdated. They use one in Germany

Looking at it now, McLaren need to be away from Honda to truly access there own design department.

I think with a proper chassis the Honda should have been good for 4th if reliability was in place. Rest of it was all McLaren.

It leaves the question if it's possible to find a driver to match Alonso in the short term anyway. Other than maybe Ricciardo....
I know this is very unlikely, but thanks for posting, I´ve never considered this and now I´m drooling! =P~ =P~ =P~

Everyone is worried about the drivers while the real concern should be management issues and outdated equipment.

Ricciardo Will never consider to join McLaren unless he sees very clear signs of improvement. If he leaves RB he has some good choices like Ferrari or maybe Mercedes.

Well, as I said, very unlikely. But Ferrari or Mercedes are not that easy either

To the two posters above Vasconia.... we can´t talk about drivers until McLaren is fighting for victories? Will you notify us when we´re allowed to talk about drivers?

Planet F1:
But while Renault may lose Red Bull as an engine customer, they will continue to supply McLaren in 2019.

And Abiteboul reckons that is a pretty good reference for Renault’s work team to compare themselves against.

“If Red Bull is the aerodynamic reference, then McLaren is for the mechanical part of the car,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for us so we’ll see where it takes us, for now until 2020.

“We’ll see what happens then.”

Not so sure I agree with Abiteboul so far for 2018.

Why are we expecting McLaren to win races yesterday? They'll take another step forward soon, in another 4 or 5 races. That update should be enough to comfortably clear the midfield or just over half a second slower than Red Bull.
