Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Well, I never got that nuanced with it. :) Who knows what Renault, RB, and Ferrari were/are doing with WG aero... DF related, drag related...

The turbine here is unique from other non-MGU assisted applications in that it will maintain its rotational speed when the WG are opened. FWIW I'm asking, proffering, not proclaiming.

Basically, in the absence of, or in the reduction of, a pressure differential, does a centrifugal turbine become a centrifugal pump?

Compressor does all the pumping work. Exhaust pulses only leave tiny vacuums in their wake. Their frequency and the temperature of the environment mean even with the turbine at full speed, wastegates wide open, the turbine is still seeing pressure.

Considering what is possible with the H, as a new engine builder I'd want a big compressor relative to the turbine, one that's likely to boost creep. The opposite of what Honda did in 2015.

What does this mean?

It means that it produces runaway boost. That the wategates cannot evacuate enough exhaust gases to slow down the turbine. Usually the result of a mismatched turbo.

Mercedes had a new fuel in Hungary giving them 18 extra BHP in every engine mode and less need for fuel saving.

Thanks for this article, if this is true that would be great news and just in time for the upcoming races (still expecting Ferrari to be fastest). But how come that they didn't use it in qwf then, otherwise they must have gotten pole, no?

When will Merc bring spec 3? Spa, Monza or later? If they can eke some more out of the engine due to improved cooling, research and now this new fuel, in combination with a better understanding of the upgrade package and a Lewis on fire, this could give dynamite [-o<

They used it the whole weekend, just one of those almost perfect laps beat them by just 18 thousands.
Also, the fuel efficiency part is only really noticable in the race,in quali that is not a problem and they run 3 laps of fuel, so a % decrease in less fuel needed is less of an differentiator. With 72 laps of fuel it adds up on the other hand.

Yes, 18BHP (always) AND more fuel efficiency (most useful in the race)

They used it the whole weekend, in fact you are not even allowed to use different blends if I am correct.

Just one of those times the second best car’s driver absolutely nailed it and the guys in the best car have been scruffy. Only by 18 thousands mind you. You can see the comparison here https://youtu.be/hkD715UkJ50 including a minimap who is faster on which section. Remember Jerez 1997 when three drivers, three setups and 2 different teams had the exact same lap time to the thousand?

Lewis Hamilton also had those laps in the past with McLaren he was in the second best car and pulled an absolute beast of a lap out of the bag.

The still have by far the most poles this year. The RB, due to the lack of powerful qual modes, is still regarded as the biggest improver between quali and race. But these last few races that has been shifting a bit towards a balanced style like Merc has. Ferrari on the other hand can indeed be called a quali car, with far less race pace than quali pace.

Lewis will disagree. It's just not clicking with this car on quali day this season.

Back to the actual thread topic...

Mercedes/Petronas said last year they were going to enlist the help of universities to assist in developing the fuel to match what at the time were significant Ferrari gains. This could be the (early) result of that research.
