It's a shame PZ's thread about the 2021 rule changes is locked actually. I just heard something that would have been relevant to that.

Was listening to the Beyond the Grid with Grosjean (very good and worth a listen anyway) where they talk about 2021 and he states (verbatim) "...it's been a bit open so I can say it, but the rules were made to slow down Mercedes."

So there you have it.
this article is from 2018. if someone thinks it was conceived to slow down mercedes, it's just a personal opinion.
Ross Brawn wrote:One of biggest criticisms of the current generation of F1 cars is that they can’t get close enough to each other, which obviously makes overtaking difficult. So when F1 started looking at designs for 2021, making the cars more raceable was at the core of the plans. The first phase of achieving this aim will come in 2019, with the move to bigger, wider, simpler front wings, which several squads tested iterations of during in-season testing this year.

I'll take Romain Grosjean's opinion as a pretty informed one.
absolutely. we all can take whichever opinion that pleases us.
if mercedes doesn't get it right, it's because they didn't do good enough job, not because regulations were made to hurt them (no one knows for sure, not even mercedes). same applies to every team on the grid. with budget restrictions in place, it's anyone's game to get ahead, if someone doesn't, crying over the regulation changes would just be considered lame excuse.

That is, of course, referring to a whole different set of regulations...

The irony that it looks like Mercedes may still win both championships. Just proves how well run the team is.

It's still very early in the season, but I'm surprised that Red Bull didn't learn from Bahrain when Mercedes saved two sets of hard tyres for the race giving them better strategy options. Red Bull seemed to make the same mistake again in Spain by not having a second set of mediums available for the race which limited their options.

I guess it's easy to say with hindsight and Red Bull were just factoring which tyre combination would be theoretically quickest but it seems like Mercedes are thinking one step ahead of everyone else imo.

Mercedes is a great team with a unbelievable history of success, the W11 was a incredible car so they already had the foundations for the W12 which they appear to be refining into a championship winner.

They may have looked weak in testing but they have comeback strongly, so I don't think there will be any Irony if they win the championship again, it's just a combination of the best driver with the best team who get the most out of a great car. IMO

really? what's the difference please, between what was conceived in 2018 for 2021 and where those stand for 2022?

The article was from 2018, before Covid. Back then, 2021 was supposed to see the new ground effect cars.

I think what Romain was referring to were the rule changes from 2020-2021. The new rules were supposed to protect the tires because they are using an old design, and the cars are producing a lot more downforce. The 2021 rules are what we have now (changes to the diffuser and floor mostly).

The "2021" rules from that article won't come until next year.

Grosjean is talking about the changes made this season - the ones that cut away the side of the floor ahead of the rear wheels.

Brawn is talking about the "tunnel cars" that they have brought in for next year (should have been sooner but Covid19 happened).

ok in that case, you need to address @elsorchio for his incorrect understanding. in his post, he referred to 2021 changes as targeted towards mercedes, as per grosjean and i address with that as the discussion point.

This year is 2021. There have been changes this year. Those are the changes they are referring to. You appear to mixing things up, not them.

ok in that case, my bad. i wonder why @elsorchio then went on to say, he trust what grosjean. but i like the hindsight geniuses like grosjean, because no one predicted and neither did mercedes made any news about the 2021 changes targeted for them or would affect them, when those regulations were agreed by teams. that is now done and dusted and the chapter over.

Because in the way he says it, (to me at least) it implies it was known within the sport. You are of course perfectly within your rights to disagree with that, whether you've listened to it or not. All I was doing was posting something I heard from an ex driver which was interesting to me.

And it's not really in Mercedes DNA to really play the 'woe is me, we are such victims' thing like Aston Martin did- at least outwardly anyway. Their mentality as shown this season is just that it's an opportunity to overcome another challenge.
