Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Why would Mercedes waste time and resource when they could just easily buy a proven concept?

The jet ignititer is just another component like a sparkplug, injector or a valve. It is wiser to work with mahle to design one for you than wasting time and resources on it. Imagine the years of research and testing put into that igniter alone....

You mean besides the patents, the licensing, and the fact that they're kicking everyone's butts?

Mercedes have been toying around with this idea in their road cars for a long time now, since around 2005.
DiesOtto used spark plugs but had a "energy saving" mode(Controlled auto ignition) in low demand conditions which did not require the spark plugs. A variation of compression ignition I believe.

This engine also had variable compression ratio technology, which was implemented to boost efficiency.

So it's no stretch of the imagination to see Mercedes having something similar to Mahle, bearing in mind the direction of their research in improving combustion efficiency. So while the above is not evidence, it certainly is er....smoke to the fire? :D

Merc have denied both HCCI, Mahle involvement and a pre chamber ignition.
There are many means to ignite a largely lean mix in a combustion chamber . Petronas are closely involved, which could link a lean GDI tech called Hyboost, part developed by Ricardo and Petronas.
But Merc remain tight lipped about all of this, but do suggest it's their own tech in there, other than saging 'it' is an outwardly conventional lay out, refined for the lean burn tech.

Yes. That Ricardo/Petronas work was discussed on here two years ago and it may be relevant, if only indirectly.

But we're all speculating, of course :D

I doubt patents/royalties have anything to do with what people are/aren't using?

They will deny. They will never tell us what is inside that engine. But the clue is that the mercedes engineers who went to ferrari and renault spilt the beans so we can loom on those engines to make a good guess what Merc has.

Renault lack of coin usage. Does that indicate they are working on an engine that does not fit in the current cars?

For me this is more because they want to maximise the 2017 motor, so they put all ressources on it (ingineers and test benches). All the things that distract them to that objective is put aside. I think they work on software and fuel for 2016 spec only. Something is planed for singapour (if i understood well helmut marko today on sky).
