For reference Bottas's laps all would have been in the top 6 in qualifying last year.

If I am not mistaken, I think the current cool temperatures during testing account for a bit of laptime (and of course, free choice of tires). Didn't last years testing times compare favorably to Q3 times at Barcelona later in the year (comparing like for like on same compounds)?

2016 cars where much slower than 2017 cars because of the many rule changes.

Last year fastest lap in testing was a 1:18.8xx using the super soft tire, pole was .3 seconds slower using the soft tire. Which means the Mercedes last year was probably good for low 18's using super softs. Starting race pace was in the 25's, vs 1:19.1 for pole, that means there is 6-7 seconds between starting race pace and full on qualifying time.

Once we see people do race simulations subtract 6 seconds and you more or less have total pace of the car. If the starting race pace for the simulations is 1:22 or 1:23 subtract 6 seconds and that gives you your ultimate pace of 1:16 or 1:17 more or less what I've predicted.

Red Bull doing a race sim

Red Bull Racing is performing a first race simulation. Daniel Ricciardo started on the mediums and posted times around 1:23.3. Then he made a pit stop, the team fitted new medium tyres and now the Australian goes around in laps of around 1:22.5.

Why do you say that? Their testing times seem to be evenly matched. Gasley's time yesterday was close to Hartley's time today.

Would they start the race with the medium compound though? Surely they'd qualify with the soft, so that would be the tire for the first stint, those are probably worth close to a second in race trim, still think 16's are possible.

Yesterday is windy, colder, and also brake system failure. I think gasly Way better in outright speed, but hartley more composed. Also dont forget about track evolution because of new asphalt
