F1 engine sound problem

Half the power out put, half the rpm. They will sound very different to the F1 ones.

I don't think that sound was the overriding objective of the engine selection criteria. They obviously excluded diesels to make sure the sound would be on F1 levels but the main idea was creating a very efficient and affordable engine which would appeal to many manufacturers. The I4 ticks all these boxes. It just happens not to fit into Ferrari's plans which caused all the stramach.

They should just turbo small V8's and call it a day.

I've never heard a V5. Would it be similar to i5 in any way? If so that would sound very close to V10 at high revs.

They're closer to a V6... they offset cylinders side to side...

That would pose some issues with using two turbos. Looks like a single turbo set up with that.

Inline 5 is an odd sounding motor. I am not going to expect much in the way of interesting F1-like sounds with tiny turbo4s as the engine will be more about the turbo and exhaust manifold then with the engine itself. Expect lots of 'woosh' and other descriptive yet boring onomatopoeias. It's going to be MotoGP with turbos. Get ready for extremely tight rear end body work though.

I don't think we're talking about the same thing, he's talking about engine balancing.
Older you mean when the engine was used to automatically prevent rear lockups? that was the more common source of odd noises coming from engines while the car was braking before 07'

No, by older I'm talking about around the mid nineties.

As long as it's not a flat six. The Porsche 911 has an incredible record in racing, yet I have never met anyone who was inspired or thrilled by their sound.

One of the coolest sounds I ever heard was an inline 3 cylinder motorcycle with a 3 into 1 megaphone.


And this, this is my favorite. Without a doubt, this beast had presence, and everyone within five miles of the circuit knew when this bad boy was on track.

As long as it's loud and the engine noise paints a picture of the dynamics of what the car is doing at the moment, I will be happy.
