Intentionally passing max allowed engines

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

No need for a boost pressure limit when you have a fuel flow rate limit. Both effectively (if not strictly) limit max power.

Surely the risks in playing about like this are too dangerous?

At the front of a race, in the lead, you have the chance to cruise and reduce stress on the engine. If you're at the back, you're more likely to be caning it, increasing fuel usage and wear. Plus starting further back puts you in danger of not finishing thanks to the risk factor that's inherent in the field position.

Personally, I'd rather build the engine to be just a little stronger than risk it all.
