After his serious accident he just hasn't been the same. I believe he just needs time to re gain confidence, a few victories over Alonso would help :)

F1 drivers, just like any other drivers need to constantly train and just like any other sportsmen they cannot constantly operate at their peak performance levels. They cannot be the very best in the world only because "They have talent". Lets describe talent then, shall we?
"Talent" in reality is a set of specific neural networks, specifically optimised for:
1) making all needed calculations i.e. grip limits estimation possibly accurate, in possibly shortest time;
2) synchronising tens of thousands of muscles with very limited margins, in terms of speed, timing and precision;
3) recieving input data at much faster rate than most men (for example, most men have visual data refresh rate of about 4-5 hz, smoothed with interpolation; in that rate lowest possible reaction time could be about 200ms - and thats a lot of time in F1...)
and so on...
In F1 terms anyway that is.
In case of young drivers (kids), "talent" can be considered as brain's ability and capacity to create and tune more less correct for the purpose neural connections. Kid enjoys some activity when its brain decides they can be good at it and encourages for more training for example by stimulating production of apropriate hormones. If after some time of one man's training maximum level is achieved and the other one is still improving, then the latter has developed better suited neural net for the task - is more talented.

Unused neural networks are being slightly reconfigured and/or can be used for completelly different tasks. Thats one of the reasons why F1 drivers need to train - to keep their brains "tuned" for optimal performance in some sport.
The other thing is they need to adapt to every single change of conditions - like car behaviour change. Brain predicts car behaviour using a neural network models. Like any other mathematical models, it has defined structure and parameters. Training is needed to adjust the parameters in the model for better representation.
If modelling of a car in driver's brain has wrong structure then it cannot achieve convergence with the real-world model. That's probably why a car can suit a driver or quite the oposite as we have seen in case of Massa's replacement i believe. They just couldn't tune their models to it properly without reorganising their brain...

So keeping brain in good shape is one thing - the other is physical fitness. If Your body simply can't keep up with what Your brain want's, You won't be at Your best, regardless of how "talented" You are.

There's quite a lot of influence of psyche too! Most of men could probably do somersault straight away, even if they spend most of their lives in front of TV. Their body could that is. But i seriously doubt ANY McDonald's everyday visitor would agree - lack of confidence would result in impressive failure probably...

My point is - to be at their best F1 drivers need to keep their brains, bodies and psyche in perfect shape. And that most certainly can't be achieved without hard WORK. It looks like Massa is currently missing one/some ingriedients, wonder which (one)?

PS. Sorry for long boring post :D

It maybe until 2012, but i think that Massa will be replaced by a Sauber driver at the end of the season with Massa moving to either Renault Renault or moving in the other direction to Sauber.

I can see Ferrari being Alonso/Perez next year with Sauber being Kobiyashai/Bianchi as im sure that Sauber are getting a rebate for having a Ferrari Driver Academy driver in one of their cars, like how Massa came to Ferrari.

If Massa is put out to grass from Ferrari it can lead two ways, Staying in F1 with Renault if Kubica isn't able to come back, as i can see Heidfeld being given the boot from Einstone if he dosnt perform as they have Bruno Senna or Romain Grosjean geting a race or two by late on in the season if Heidfeld dosnt perform.

The other way for Massa is to take a lead role in Ferraris rumoured entry into Le Mans LMP1 for 2013 as Ferrari are re positioning 400-500 F1 employees this yearto bring their total down from 800-900 to roughly 400 as per the RRA rules for 2012.

I can see Massa being out of Ferrari for the start of 2012. Sadly i can see his Ferrari being in its autumn, and the summer of his Ferrari career being the 2008 season.

I think that Massa will stay in F1, im just not sure how long he has left as we see with Liuzzi, he has slipped from a strong midfield car to a sluggish tail end car. Christian Klien has been in the same predicament, there is just too many good up and coming fast youngsters in GP2 now that bring a little money that will be going for the midfield seats that Massa would be going for.

He is a good driver, but one that i can safely say has had his time at a front running team, time to move over and give another a chance, he's not the only driver in that area of his career, Heidfeld is another, some could argue that Webber is another now.

If i were Ferrari id be looking for the next up and coming driver and i think that at Melbourne we saw that light shine enough on Perez that Ferrari will take note.

Ill give Massa this year and a couple more in F1 before moving over and looking forward to racing in LMS for the next 10 years of his racing career.

How am I bashing Massa when I am arguing that he is as good as he ever was as opposed to everyone here saying he is now a damaged slow driver?

Well denying that a major life threatening accident will have any affect on someone sounds like bashing to me.

Well, he beat Alonso this time.

With Ferrari screwing up his first pit stop.

I'll second that. It was crystal clear Massa slowed down and let Alonso past. He was defending against Button ruthlessly lap after lap, yet Alonso managed to overtake in what - 2 or 3 corners ? Whoever thinks Massa did not slow down and let Alonso past should get a grip on reality; sorry, there's no polite way of putting it...
Massa absolutely did not slow down. He was acclerating the entire time. You're so biased that you mistake your lack of grip on reality for other people's. I'm sorry if this seems confrontational, but I'm tired of the lie that Massa slowed down.

Yes, Massa was utterly disgusted with his first pit stop, as he angrily raised his hand on the getaway from his pit box. A costly pit stop mistake by Ferrari ruined stronger race performance by Massa.

In my point of view if he doesn't do something outstanding this year, he may be replaced by Perez if he is up to it. If not he may stay for another year. Even if he gets the boot from Ferrari I hope he stays in F1.

A bit out of subject guys...
Just wanted to know...
How long do you think Massa will be able to keep his seat at Ferrari?
I mean, i like him, but then i have to admit, he's completely out of pace!!!
Who do you see taking his place? (Not Hamilton for sure)
Maybe Ferrari should give JULES BIANCHI his chance.
What's do you think guys???

Hi guys,
Just wanted to know your point of view on this matter.
What do you think if Ferrari gives Massa's seat to Jules Bianchi?
I mean the guy is a great talent. So, Ferrari could at least let him drive in Massa's place on Fridays.
What do you think?
