it was a modified citroen gear box and they were reinforced to withstand the high loads of the Climax engine.
He had to use this as not much gearboxes for rear-engined cars did exist at this time.

You win matt21...he also wanted to sit the gearbox higher relative to the engine so they could run the engine/box as low as possible...the housing was extended and fitted with a spur gear on the input shaft.

One of the little stories i always remember from his book...not only did he win that championship, he helped design and build the car to take him there
