Yes because RBR is known for it's low fuel glory runs... Please stop spreading bs! Ricciardo did 6 laps after his best (11 lap stint in total) before he went to the pits. Currently it looks like it's Mercs vs. Ricciardo and even if you add the usual 0,5s that Mercs will improve by cranking up their engine, it will not be a walk in the park for them. I expect a pole time in the low 1.13s and a decent recovery of Ferrari.

This is called making educated guesses.

Even before practice, there are people who expected RedBull to run well here. It's a street circuit where mechanical grip is important and engine power deficit would be least noticeable. Factors that mean this is potentially one of RedBull strongest tracks. Then there is also that these FP times are already much better than the last year pole time. Two reasons: Ultra-softs and the pool chicane. And the cars have been improved since last year too. Even so, Ricciardos time was quite impressive for a FP2 time.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

Still, can't be good for driver confidence and doesn't speak well to the balance of the car that so many mistakes were made (by both drivers).
That would be good... If not for the fact that in the last race Ferrari showed that they are kinda clueless on how to nail down the setup of this car.
Somewhat agree from the evidence this year but let's see. I tend to think there's some truth in Vettel's comments after P2:

"We will be a lot better on Saturday," he added. "Today it was not the main focus to rank high up [in the times], but the running we had was a bit scrappy. We tried a couple of things but it's fair to say that some of them didn't work.

Single lap times are meaningless look at long runs

Vettel has slightly more pace than Riccardo.

I'm not sure how much of a difference the engine is making. Or if it was indeed used. Don't they usually use different engines for some FP sessions?

I'll go with Ricciardo or Hamilton. I'll be honest; I'll be mad if Rosberg gets it. IMO Redbull will be close, so I think they might have it in them to upset the natural order (Mercedes on top). I don't think Ferrari will be front-row contesters.

Who knows; maybe RedBull will be further away than I think and Mercedes will walk it with a huge gap... we'll see!

How do you get to that conclusion?

I don't mean that to say I disagree, I just can't make head nor tail of those runs.

I'd also argue that long run pace (e.g. "race pace") is less than important than outright speed. Here, more than anywhere, you want to maximize one lap performance, because position is everything. I.e. optimum strategy: 1 pit stop, and enough pace to control the cars behind you and not be caught out with an undercut.

If Ferrari has race pace is irrelevant if they are stuck behind traffic because they dont have that one lap pace and positional advantage.

It's not writing them off (even though the difference to the lead is rather big) or affirming they won't get it right, more of a "it's up in the air if they'll get it right".

@bhall lol good one.

Single lap = qual, qual = track position. At Monaco, this is king.

Ricciardo is on fire!

I'm really hoping he can bag his first pole at Monaco, imo he has the talent and the equipment now to really take the fight to the Mercedes boys!
