Hmmm, annoying. I wonder if vettel could have been close to nico there; given usual gap to kimi, I think it was a possibility.

Real shame but I think he'll have some fun in the race, particularly if there's a safety car.

- Verstappen again outqualified by Sainz, Red Bull know what they're doing when they avoid any good benchmarks for their chosen ones, last season even Vergne was too good for Kvyat and now Sainz is too good for Verstappen

- Lotus wasted supersofts in Q2 with RG, one run plus safety would have been more than enough like Williams did, in the race when they have the best chance of the season in Q #-o , how is Permane keeping his job? What did they do on the second run in Q3? There's no area when they can't mess up, maybe at least they'll learn from Canada not to sell FP anymore but I'm not holding my breath.

RAI made pretty big gains on last year's Q3 - 1.2s, but still not 2-3s. Too bad VET didn't get into Q3 to compare.

Like for like - I.e. Kimi to kimi - Ferrari have improved over a second (1.2). Even fastest Ferrari to fastest Ferrari you're talking 0.8 improvement - but I still think Seb or fernando (we're he in this year's car) would have been faster.

It was Pirelli who said they'd be 2-3 seconds quicker but didn't turn out to be the case. Merc were aiming to find a second from their engine so maybe none of the teams other than Ferrari have found the time that were expecting.

Vettel would have been better in qualifying but we don't know if he would have qualified ahead of Kimi or not as Kimi was looking good this weekend. Kimi has been much better in race so let's see what he can do tomorrow.

Lewis has his qualifying form back. Can't see Nico getting a pole trophy this year.

Kimi finally able to nail a Q3 lap and improve on it as well. Excited to see what he can do in the race. Unlucky for Seb to have missed out on qualifying to Q2.

Lewis going for the standard pole and Nico faltering to disappoint :(

Lotus looking strong on the Qualifying, wonder if they keep it up in the race. A mixed grid. Hopefully some good racing and less retirements tomorrow.

Ferrari had lots of ground available to make up. Unlike merc for instance. Something I've been saying for ages now. Yet delusional people were still believing some magic will make up laptime out of thin air.

Because the Merc rumour said their fuel system would get them a second from the engine alone.

Interesting comment from Perez on sky, saying this year's car was 0.8s slower than last year's. Ricciardo has also been saying they're only now getting to 2014 levels and Williams initially said it took a long time to claw back the downforce lost because of nose regulation change.

So it implies (to me at least) that the teams who have improved have had to overcome a backwards step to get there. In Ferrari's case, you wonder if already having such a low nose last year meant they felt it less and hence could concentrate on other things.

Vettel demoted 5 places on the grid for overtaking under the red flag.
