Indeed the V12 was almost in production when the V10 layout was imposed. That meant an almost complete redesign was required and there was no way the new engine could be ready in time for the 2001 season.

Rumour had it at the time that some italian team did not really think that a japanese V12 was a good thing, while they had just abandonned their cherished layout to follow the trend.
But those were only rumours obviously.
