As to what car... er no idea, I do recall it was in the 60's that he died en-route to the French GP.

(I can only think of Ford Sierra but that was Frank Williams - non fatal)

Driver and what can never be repeated are correct =D> =D> . Now you just need the car. You do get bonus points for knowing he was on his way to the French GP, '66 I think.

I found the model/make of the car by accident. I was looking up something about Hawthorn after reading "Death Race". Fascinating book. I need to find more classical motorsports literature.

I found make model too now, but rather than spill beans, I'll let someone who may know answer.
It was 1966, thanks ;) It was the French GP and he was indeed en-route, my memory didn't fail me there!

Not enough wins. My first thought yesterday was Matra.

I'm guessing markc is being sneaky here.

Are you a Renault RS8 3.0 V10 powering the 1996 Williams FW18 of Damon Hill (8 wins 1 WDC) and Jacques Villeneuve (4 wins)?

I have to admit I used wiki for this, took a bit of digging! Not that I mind, I was all over the place. Looking at brothers(thinking maybe it was a father) and then driver/team managers. Finally I thought what about cars, but Matra is the only French car to win a WDC(the RS25/26 are technically British). That left me with engines...I sure hope I'm right.

Well done :) Over to you CMSMJ1...

Sorry 1158, I was being VERY sneaky see below:

Matra factoids:
9 wins as chassis all with Jackie Stewart - 68 and 69, engine Ford DFV.
3 wins as engine supplier all with Jacques Laffite - 77 and 81 Matra V12.
= 12 total.

Interesting factoid:
Matra as chassis and engine combined were never as successful!

Excellent.. Liked the Renault slant..

Anyways.. I was watching a race the other day and James Hunt was walking about a podium finisher...

He said (something along the lines of)

"The other drivers tell me he has a tic. He has a blinking tic. That is the reason he crashes so much. He might be coming into a corner and the tic would happen and obviously you cannot drive with your eyes shut. I have no idea how the circuit doctor keeps signing him off...but here he is"

So - Who is this driver??

I loved Hunt, some of the things he said in commentary... Poor Murray!

As to the question: he didn't like back markers, but I recall Mansel and de Cesaris, to which Hunt called him an idiot. He was also crash happy and known as de Crasheris.
He also podiumed a few times.

so: Andrea de Cesaris?

I must confess that might be a tougher question. However it was Andrea de Cesaris. His last podium in a career that might have been better than it was .

Aye, a good reliable journeyman at the end.

Ok another Hunt question:
James Hunt: "... and all I can say to that is: Bull$h!&!"
Who was James calling out on their explanation of their slow driving of late?
Bonus: what was the excuse to cause the ire of Shunt?
More bonuses: Track and year.

Oh, think I know this one.

I just happened to be reading stuff about Renault in F1 and the turbo era they started. He said it about René Arnoux. The excuse was Arnoux's driving style wasn't suited to atmospheric engined cars.

Don't remember what track/year this was.

Edit: I went and wiki'd the bonus part. Looks like it was '88 at Adelaide. Berger had driven past Senna and Prost and was lapping Arnoux when Arnoux turned into him.

Funny side note, I noticed in '88 at Spa Arnoux and de Cesaris tangled on lap 2
