I think the Crofty disconnect is that he used to be radio - and if you're doing radio you have to be more graphic in your descriptions, while if you're a TV guy you really have to just complete and clarify the picture on the telly. Still much better than Legard mind you. Who was especially epic when Webber pun in Korea. He was basically narrating the whole thing like he was reading subtitles!

In some ways I'm glad I'm watching the race and not listening to his commentary on the radio. Atm his making a lot of mistakes and I wouldn't have a clue what's going on, I'd be utterly confused. Whilst when people listened to him on the radio they wouldn't know the mistakes he makes, but whilst watching on TV i can see he makes a lot.

To be perfectly honest - and I know I'm in the minority - I miss James Allen's commentary. I think he's the most knowledgeable recent commentator with journalistic/reporting experience. I thought Brundle was good too; but he lacked that ability to really build up tension or the mood in the room. Legard, Crofty, Allen and Walker could do that - but Crofty, Legard and Murray makes a few mistakes (albeit Crofty's the best amongst them). Murray - nuff said. Crofty is good in all respects but does make the occasional guff. Legard talks rubbish, but I do feel he is able to build up the mood and tension in commentary - I'll give him that. JA for me personally was the best blend between knowledgeability and his commentary skills.

I absolutely agree with you ray, James Allen and Brundle were a great team. Crofty's mistakes are getting on my nerves.

James Allen might have been tolerable if he didn't orgasm everytime Hamilton did something.

Well it used to be Kimi up to 2005 didn't it? Then he managed to name drop Hamilton in 2006 all the time. It made me curious to who that Hamilton character was (I don't really watch GP2).

The one that really got on my nerves was the 2008 Italian Grand Prix though. Hamilton was running behind Fisichella. Fisichella snatches his rear brakes, and sort of fishtails off into the runoff. Hamilton took the place as a result. And suddenly James Allen went, "OH! That was GLORIOUS by Hamilton!"

I blinked several times trying to make sense of what had just happened.

It is rather uncomfortable to hear a man wet himself with excitement on live TV. Perhaps thats why he does so much better as a primarily print journalist.

Yes James Allen is a fantastic journalist when it comes to his writing. Mind you - all of these are better than Mr. "Kimi lost 50rpm due to diagonaling the straight!"

Then you'd better hope the Neviller doesn't start commentating F1.
