I think we will learn that Williams will desperately miss those points come the end of the season.

However saying that, this is where I see the race pace of the cars so far.

McLaren, RBR
Mercedes (I believe they will sort their issue quickly), Lotus, Williams
Sauber, Ferrari
TR, FI
Caterham
& the rest

I think we can take away from FP2 in Malaysia that McLaren are fastest single lap and Red Bull probably fastest in race pace. So the race dynamics could be similar to Melbourve with the Macs leading and Vettel catching them up through the pit stops.

I am not sure whether RBR is faster than McLaren in terms of race pace, but yeah, they are pretty closely matched.

Mi list,

MCL -- Seams better prepared, have a strong car, drivers are happy with the car.
RBR -- I cant just count them off, but they seams to be strugling quite a bit. Vettel will have it hard this year.
----

AMG-Lotus -- Both have Strenghts and Weaknesses, but for me at least AMG has a little more to give.. some podiums perhaps.

Ferrari -- Once on the european season they will step up.

-----

The rest.

Red Bull admits era of dominance is over
Make no mistake, the era of Red Bull’s utter dominance is over. After McLaren ruled over last weekend’s Malaysian grand prix, Friday in Malaysia indicated the British team will stay on top in the Sepang heat.

Over a single lap, world champion Sebastian Vettel admitted to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport: “McLaren is too strong for us.”

On long runs, Adrian Newey’s RB8 is closer.

“This is the positive aspect of the day,” said Dr Helmut Marko on Friday. “We have not managed to balance the car for one lap only. This applies to both tyre compounds – both drivers are having trouble setting up the car.

“Any setup change raises more questions, causing reactions that we do not expect. We are still answering the question of ‘what causes what?’”

Marko admitted plainly: “We have lost our supremacy in qualifying. McLaren is better for one lap, and even Mercedes thanks to its F-duct is very strong.

“The Mercedes is quick as a flash on the straight and also Alonso is eerily consistent and in the race could be a problem,” said the Austrian.

Red Bull also remains unhappy with Mercedes’ F-duct, but there should be no post-race protest in Malaysia – the FIA had instructed unhappy teams to file their protests before Friday practice, in the interests of the ‘show’.

Additionally, in Charlie Whiting’s words at Sepang: “There is nothing to complain about.”

I'm not necessarily an Alonso fan, but there's no denying that dude is relentless on the track.

His performance in the shipping crate that is the F2012 may make me a fan just yet.

On combined qualy and race pace we should have the order:

McLaren
Red Bull
Mercedes
Lotus
Ferrari

Which really is an embarrassment for Ferrari. I still believe that they are not allowed to design a new chassis. It is prohibited by the RRA which is still valid. Other teams could protest the legality at the FiA if Ferrari do a redesign.

sure ,but not by the team itself. Schumacher aand Brawns predictions were spot on these days or even a bit on the conservative side.
I think it´s not in their hands how we the fans give them a bit too much credit yet. They have improved big time no doubt their qualy pace is decent so what?

Haug said today that Mercedes consider themselves the third force and I believe that is realistic. Certainly they are faster than Ferrari and I reckon they are also faster than Lotus. Lotus is a case of how well Räikkönen gels with the car. At the moment I believe that Merc are a bit faster which may change by the time that Lotus has copied their F-duct DRS.

I also believe that Vettel's quali dominance over Webber has passed, only if Mark could learn how to drop the clutch...

@WB: I'm not sure that MGP is faster than Lotus. On qualifiying they are close (even if Raikkonen could have been P2 without mistake), but on race pace Lotus is stronger IMO. Raikkonen was faster than Rosberg in Melbourne and was not ahead of him before the accident only because of a pit stop issue. And he started 17th...

Perhaps we look at race pace and revisit that assessment in ten hours time.

Great analysis, i think i'd have to agree with this order but keep your eye out for Sauber. This year they have a rather quick car in qualifying and race pace.

Me too thinks Mercedes is not really faster than Lotus in qualy mode. Raikkonen (and Hamilton) were allways close in S1 to the Merc despite their super-double-DRSF-duct. and allways faster in the aerodynamic S2. And KR and Grosjean made big mistakes in Q3 and respectively lost 2 tenths, atleast.
They are at least equal in qaly... both did'nt show all their potential but it seems E20's "hidden" potential is bigger.
