What makes a GP boring?

We had an interesting idea on the IRC channel many moons ago when we had a string of wet/dry races. During the last half of the race at a random time sprinklers would come on and soak the track simulating a sudden rain shower. :D

Predictability: the races where you can confidently say who is going to win after the first set of stops are aways a bit of drag. The races where you know who is going to win after the first corner are even worse....

The best battles we've had in the past seem to have been in situations where the drivers could keep pushing the cars faster and faster but with that came an increased chance of errors. Contrast that with the more predictable, modern tracks and cars, where the very fastest pace a car can manage is easy to find and maintain.

Tyre management seems to have something to do with it as well- drivers are always going on about having to conserve their tyres, never about how they just went and thrashed the car around the track for 60 laps. Perhaps we could have tyres that lasted a bit better, or came pre-grained or something, so they were no longer the limiting factor on pace.
