sato+honda=kaboom

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Even if the engineers told Sato to ease off during the out lap, would he listen? This is a man who crashed into Barrichello and put himself ouit of a race when he was in a good position to overtake within the next lap anyway - and then said he would do the exact same thing if he could have it over!!!

Not too sure that the problem is on the outlap anyway - Michael Shumacher is generally thought to be the king of the blistering in and out laps yet we don't see his engine blowing after pit stops.... had a thought that the problem may be what happening when the car is on the rev limiter in the pit lane - does anyone know whether the drivers sit on a wide open throttle during the pit lane and just let the limiter sort it out, which is going to put additional loads on the engine or do some guys keep the throttle open just enough to engage the pit lane limiter?

yeah should be all down to the rev limiter there......
another thought... i know someone suggested that Sato may have been running some different bits in his engine at some races but this was never confirmed.... could it be possible that the Honda engineers tweaked his engine settings a lil to keep him up there with Jenson and that this may have lead to the problems.... remember Prost always had concerns about this when he was racing with Ayrton....whether it was true or not???

getting a quick 50 horses more then jenson? you´re kidding....Honda wants to win end of story.you could get 2tenth per lap with a significant power improvement at best(Seee Racecar engineering Vol14/No6)

the guest is right....and besides wanting to win they also want to finish races! Is somebody has an extra 50hp it's Anthony Davidson! They can gamble with Davidsons engine but they shouldn't gamble with Satos or Jensens.

to me it's all down to Sato's driving style...in 1995 Barrichello broke a few engines in testing because of his new driving style....his engine kept on running at an extra 10ºC then Irvine's. At the end he returned to his old driving style.

for me it is either a mistake in preparatio/procedures or Sato treating
the thing different than Jenson.
should be easy to find out.
Thanks monstro for sharing views...marcush.

hey i never said it happens, just a casual thought.......hehe
anyone know if they are both left foot brakers?? i figure so and if he was trailing the throttle all the time whilst braking it may cause problems but easily spotted on the telemetry....
do you know what rubens was doing then monstro??

He was doing exactly what you mentioned....braking slightly while at full throtle...he solved the problem by reverting back to left foot braking.

what is the problem if you apply the brakes when at full throttle?
You increase the load on the engine, like you would put a much bigger wing on it.
This clearly calls for mapping adjustments to the engine ,as you would need to increase fueling in that case ,and maybe retard the ignition timing a bit..But how much ignition advance is there in a F1 car at full throttle?
In conventional engines you would retard the timing anyway to get max revs in top gear anyway so there would be a margin before detonation occurs. So maybe the increased fueling and ignition retard contributing to an increase in engine temps at a time when the engine is stressed to the max in terms of heat????
