Should grids be staggered ?

The three-two-three-and so on starts of the 70s, with wider cars and narrower tracks than now, were awesome and
if today's pampered and cuddled drivers should complain, I honestly couldn't care much less.

On the subject, why haven't anyone come up with the idea to prepare the grid-surface equally before the race?

Either wash it, sandblast it, rubber it, wet it, grease it or whatever.
