So let's see... A previous question in this thread mentioned Giuseppe Farina, the first ever Formula 1 World Champion, as "a former Formula 1 World Champion who's life was cut short by an automobile accident. Although the accident was not related to racing, the manufacturer of the vehicle has had a very successful Formula 1 career. Who am I, what about my F1 career can never be repeated, and what vehicle (make/model) was I driving when I had my accident?"
So now I'm thinking: Can you mention another former Formula 1 World Champion, who's life was also cut short by an automobile accident? This accident was also not related to racing, but the manufacturer of the vehicle has had a very successful career in racing (and a slightly less successful career in Formula 1). There is also something about this champion's F1 career that can never be repeated. Who am I thinking of?
That is a great question. I worded mine about Farina so that someone might think of Hawthorn. I used the Lotus connection as the deciding factor.
Mike was driving a 3.4 Mk1 Jag and had just passed the 300SL of Rob Walker. I remember he said something about never having a Merc in front of a Jag and may have
been pushing his Jag to pass the Merc in wet conditions. Really too bad, he seemed like an interesting chap.
