That is the right year, although at the time the photo was taken Mario had a good lead in the WDC, but hadn't clinched it. I am sorry if the wording made you think it was after his championship year.xpensive wrote:I believe that this is Monza 1978 and Mario is showing the calendar to "Gimax", or Carlo Franchi, who was desperatly slow in qualification with his Surtees, problem is that Mario was not yet WDC at the time?
Brands Hatch is correct. Before the startline grandstand was built.CMSMJ1 wrote:I reckon that is Brand Hatch....hmmm more to follow I am sure
I'm not certain that I understand the question, at the time of the 1978 British GP, Mario was a long way from becoming WDCMikeC wrote:Brands Hatch is correct. Before the startline grandstand was built.CMSMJ1 wrote:I reckon that is Brand Hatch....hmmm more to follow I am sure
Mike
Very close! The driver in question had a good career in small sports cars, didn't quite get to start his first and only GP, but then went on to great success in F1.CMSMJ1 wrote:I read it that he is showing the calendar as a pisstake to someone he knows well who races saloon cars and who probably managed just the one F1 start..
The answer to the "one-time" part has already appeared in this chain. You'll kick yourself.....CMSMJ1 wrote:So..I have no idea!
Correct! Here's the original caption to the picture as written by Andrew Ferguson who is the face to the right of Mario:CMSMJ1 wrote:SO, Colin Chapman!
On those occasions when a race organiser invites team managers to
take part in a celebrity race it provides the team's full-time
drivers with the heaven sent opportunity of giving back a little of
what they have had to endure themselves. At Brands Hatch in 1978
as Colin strove to do his best in just such a celebrity event Mario
Andretti wandered over to sit on the pit wall and observed the
time-keepers' watches and lap charts in full swing as they charted
the guvnor's progress. "Forget all that", he drawled, "at his lap
speed he don't need times, just show him a calendar".

I knew he was handy behind the wheel...
