What benefits do the long front wing elements have (I don't know how best to label them, they look like vanes on the front wing)?

I was wondering that too – they seem to be outwashing air... but... into the wheel rather than around it. Seems rather bizarre.

It is moving some air to the wheel, but it's also helping the endplates push even more out.

I think it has something to do with getting more air into the brake ducts.

I enhanced the pic and highlighted what I'd seen to show you and then... just remembered that the crash structure was effectively ahead the sidepod entry #-o
