I assume they tried to wait it out for another VSC or similar opportunity as there was not much to be gained by piting earlier.
Kinda weird for Osc to tryhard defend against Lando and later Will asking Lando not to 'yoyo' / defend hard vs Osc. Anyways, hoping for some good pace and good upgrades in Hungary.

Was too close to double stack under the vsc, just unfortunate timing.....a few things didnt go landos way. Oscar reovertaking him the lap previous which gave oscar pit priority and them the slow stop. I think 4th was best lando could have achieved today.

I can't really fault the team for extending Lando's stint and bleeding race time on worn H, the mediums wouldn't have lasted more than 15 laps anyway, to be driving without 'management'. The VSC timing was bad luck and he never got the worn H tyres back into the temp window proper.

My biggest grouse was - why were Piastri and Norris fighting when they were on different tyre strategies and one had to allow the other to just pass ? That was pretty stupid. Probably Piastri would've challenged Max more effectively for P3 without the broken FW endplate from his battle with LeClerc (who deserved a +10s penalty imho).

Brilliant drive by Norris, considering the circumstances, he was the 2nd fastest car today in terms of race pace, but still finished behind Hadjar (who drove a brilliant race himself btw, upped his pace as Norris was catching upto within striking distance).

Again, McLaren having awful strategy for Norris… The biases from the top trickle down.

One thing I never understood was why didn't Leclerc get a penalty for the damage that caused to Piastri? Isn't Leclerc supposed to leave space to a car that was next to him?

andrea says oscar's driving style doesnt suit the car:

"you have to attack the car, you have to accept it slides.. we are working with oscar to make sure his natural driving takes this into account. we'll figure it out and oscar'll be able to show the full extent of his talent."

Todays fiasco was all about not making sure that Oscar didn't lose out. Part of this rigid mandate they have about the lead driver being favoured for pitstops etc etc. The pit wall seem unable to see past their rigid plans and adapt to what is actually happening. Oscar's car damage was down to Oscar, a blind man in a snowstorm could see Charles was not going to back out yet Oscar just refused to back out. Lando was then racing Oscar when it was not needed, he was being held up, only for Lando to be told not to do the same with Oscar. Why are we leaving Lando out to Lap 30, losing a second or so a lap towards the end of that stint, instead of just pitting around 25 or 26 and giving him a chance ?? .. Look how close he was to Hadjar at the end. Couple of more laps and he would have had him.

I am in a minority here, to say the least, but I think the problem here is Stella. I think he is an excellent guy in the factory, a very good man manager, but a liability on the pit wall and at races. He also seems to have a very soft spot for Oscar. Lost of times it's all about him saying that we must be fair to Oscar, when Oscar is being beaten. When Oscar gifted Charles a win at Monza, because he was too busy fighting Lando, Stella states after the race that Oscar is the future. When Lando won the title last year Stella is going on about Oscar being a multiple Driver's Champion. When Lando won a sprint in Miami this year Stella states that whoever was on pole would have won that race. The fact is that Oscar has been beaten by Lando for the last three years, and he is being beaten, so far, this year. And Lando has had more DNF's than him. Max is being linked to the team for a reason.

I did a ground tour in the RAF where I was planning Tanker Trails. If you think race strategy is complicated, try that. The Vulcan that bombed Port Stanley was burning fuel on the bomb run that had passed through eleven of the thirteen tankers going south from Ascension. We were planning trails with ten tankers and twenty plus fast jets. And you cant just pull over and stop, run out of fuel and you go down.

The pitwall seem to decide on a strategy and then do everything to make it work instead of adapting to what is slap bang in front of them. Seen it so many times.

Might I suggest a new candidate for planning the strategy ?? .. What's Stevie Wonder up to these days ??

According to the stewards, Oscar wasn’t far enough along side to warrant racing room.

I guess he should have either backed out which would have allowed Hamilton to pass him easily or he should have kept his foot in, gone onto the grass- loose the back end, t-bone Leclerc who in turn smashes into the side of Hamilton taking all 3 of them out.

The stewarding decisions this season are second rate this season at best.

James Key parted ways with the company because he ‘blocked’ aggressive design ideas and chose a safer path regarding to car design. As soon as he departed the 2023 revival started accumulating to 3 world championships.

Surely there is a similar situation happening in the strategy department as well?

News on the upcoming updates:

‘With further upgrades planned over the coming rounds, the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team are optimistic about its trajectory following encouraging signs since Silverstone. Attention now turns to Hungary and the Netherlands, where the leading teams are expected to remain particularly competitive. McLaren Mastercard's development focus is centred on improving braking performance and cornering capability, with the first elements arriving in Hungary and additional updates scheduled throughout the remainder of the season. The objective is clear: to consistently challenge for podiums and victories as the Championship enters its decisive phase.’

Interesting that they have mentioned upgrading the breaking performance- new brake design?

I think the message is clear that Mclaren will have the most upgrades in the 2nd half of 2026.

Couldn’t agree more.

It’s embarrassingly obvious that Stella is not partial, and it does cost points to McLaren (and has been this way since 2024).

It always surprises me how Zak doesn’t put his foot down on this, today was a prime example.
