Mercedes switched back to the flexiwing mid-fp1 this weekend. Seems maybe the effect of that wing rule change is going to be larger than they said in the media
I am waiting with anticipation what this will mean to mclaren as well.

The car has looked decent so far, nothing stands out as being problematic. The Ferrari being quick (I was half expecting it given only 1 corner type) will throw a big spanner in the works for MCL and RBR. The top 3 will most likely be combination of LEC, MAX, and MCL.

That said I think for the 1st time in a long time qualy positions will not be critical here, the mandatory 2 stops will be the single biggest deciding factor this weekend.

Looked like Verstappen was taking it very easy in the high speed to me. But the car still had some issues with understeer at the last corner and rear axle at exits of many slow speed. Fundamentally we are too slow in the slowest speed sections to beat Macca this weekend imo

This is a circuit that requires a lot of mechanical grip particularly at the front-end, I wouldn't change the stiffer front wing because the older spec flexes too much and at Monaco you need a lot of stability.

So, Monaco highlights Mercedes biggest issue, which is the slow speeds.

FP1's and 2's dont unveil RB potential like they do others, as they have a high hit rate of fixing their car toward FP3/Quali/Race day. After all this was what was said about Imola right?

Why should red bull be able to win at Imola ............... McLaren will simply demolish the competition.

Usually they run the car very conservatively in terms of engine setting in fp1. The poor showings in fp1 are setup, but certainly also engine mode related. Since monaco isn't as power sensitive, this won't be that detrimental, but they won't get the boost they normally do from turning the wick up.

Can someone explain what the team can do to "fix the upshifts" as Max asked. I can understand things like engine modes, but I don't understand what can be done about upshifts.

I think the gearbox is electronically controlled, so would assume the settings for shifting can be changed.

Maybe there is a trade off with a harsher change in exchange for a faster change?

Car probably feels a jerk with each upshift.

Hope Ferrari takes the win if not Red Bull and Max. We look quite of the pace in the low speed corners, hope we find something for tomorrow. The target should be to finish ahead of Piastri not Norris. Lets see.

Very weird run plan from RBR today. The long run started so slow at 1.18 then got quicker almost every lap by 1 sec to end on a 1.13.

Not sure what to make of the qualy runs, slower than Ferrari on the straights but same as MCL. Loses time almost everywhere but specially in sector 2, only hope is higher fuel but don't think that will be enough to surpass FER and MCL at the moment.

For sure FP2 looked much worse vs FP1, but....
Thing is RedBull is so notoriously underperforming on Fridays that at this point I just let it go and just wait for Saturday.
